    3. I am researching my gg grandfather George MORRISON b around 1815 in Glasgow who married Amelia McGREGOR in 1837. It seems likely George's father was James and his mother Euphemia CLARK. Does anyone know if there is a Rootsweb link for MORRISON and McGREGOR only? When entering Rootsweb site, I seem to be going round in circles and getting nowhere. 1. [ScotlandGenWeb] Robertson Brick Wall
    2. Patricia Copeland
    3. I am just getting back into the swing of things after being unsubscribed for several months. I am looking for advice on what to do next as far as trying to find information on my paternal gr. grandmother. She was Mary Robertson, b. August 29, 1857 in Darvel, Scotland. Parents were John Robertson and Mary Paterson. This information was obtained from Mary’s death certificate and the Canadian National Registration Act of 1940. Mary signed the form. We visited Darvel this summer and were fortunate to sit down with the local Registrar and go through the old register. A quick phone call was also made to the GRO. Mary’s birth was not registered. In 1874, after the death of her mother, Mary came to Canada with an uncle and settled in Woodstock, Ontario, where she worked in a home. On March 21, 1882 she married Thomas Ambrose Bickle and over the years they had six children. Although Mary and Thomas married, their marriage was not registered (perhaps the local Registrar wore many hats and didn’t have time?) The church register was later destroyed in a fire. Mary had a sister who married a textile business-man and they lived in Glenridge New Jersey. I don’t know the sister’s name (possibly Margaret or Maggie). Based on a family story, it is thought that Mary was living in Glasgow before she came to Canada. While we were in Darvel the Registrar explained that in the mid 1800’s Darvel had a very transient population due to the knitting mills (lace) and farming. Mary’s parents could have been transient workers from Glasgow and just didn’t register her birth. What port would a person sail from if they were living in Glasgow? I would like to find the Robertson family. Where do I go from here? Any suggestions are welcome. Best wishes, Patricia --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [ScotlandGenWeb] Dates of Scottish people site
    2. John dods
    3. Dot, in addition to replying to you direct I am also posting to the Scotland GenWeb list, as others may have similar questions. The site is the official Scottish Record office site. It has indexes for the Statutory Marriages 1855-1926, births & christenings 1855-1901, Deaths 1855-1951. Indexes for Old Parish Records, births & christenings 1553- 1854), OPR marriages (1553-1854). The 1881,1891 & 1901 Scottish Census. All these are searchable, some of the records you can see & down load images of the entries, those that you can't look at , you can order a copy online. Basicly go to the site have a look, it explains it all better than I can. www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk I am on a budget myself, being a working solo dad with a teenager and a three year old, I have brought 2 lots of 30 credits (I still have 12 left) , cost me $18NZ this week & the same last week, thats 6 British pounds about $10US or $17AUS. I have got 1000's of indexed entries, a copy of a death record and three census pages, all a help in discovering my family. One hint I offer with my vast experence :-) with the site. To view search results costs per pages of results. You get upto 25 entries per page, so to view part of the index containing 1 entry costs you the same as viewing list of 25 entries, so I try & maximise my search results by playing arround with search parameters. You get to see how many hits your search got & how many pages it is, so I do a bit of playing arround, with date range, for try all Scotland, rather than a specfic parish/district. Say you are looking for George BINNIE, born about 1870, in Lauder. You put his name , a year range 1868 to 1872, but in Lauder. You get 3 hits. So before you look and pay your 1 credit for looking, you say well lets broaden that search. So you try the same search but don't but in a first name,(that way you may get some siblings or cousins of George) you get 14 hits, OK the try SOUNDEX on the surname & you 64 hits (3 pages), too many for you & many of them won't be BINNIE's or similar. (of course there are times when you would use Soundex or wildcards in the name) So forget SOUNDEX, just broaden the year range a bit till you get 24 or 25 entries, that way you'll get some info on a few more rellies of George, for no additional cost. Things is just a hyperthetical example but I hope it gives the picture. good hunting John Dods New Zealand --- Dot Gudger <ddg5@mindspring.com> wrote: > Can you tell me what dates this site covers? This gives you 30 credits. Each page of search results cost one credit per page (25 max index entries per page) to view. If the image of the record you want is avaliable to view you can select that & that costs you 5 credits. One Charles MURRAY found on 1901 census which would fit in with mine states that he was born in Lanarkshire. As I know very little about the counties in Scotland, could someone please let me have a list of the counties that come within the Lanarkshire area. I can then compare all the other entries I have with various places to see if any of them come within Lanarkshire, or would have done way back around 1824.
