    2. We are traveling to Scotland in April--I will be participating in the Edinburgh Easter Parade. I can't wait! While there, we hope to find some remnants of our ancestors. My husband is descended from good ole Robert the Bruce and the Stewarts. I am sure there are many descendants still around. On down on this same line there are Witherspoons and McCallums. On my side of the family there are Marshalls and Robertsons but I don't have the connections back to Scotland yet. If anyone out there can help me to find live relatives, I'd appreciate it. Kay

    3. Hi Jean, I concur with your sentiments that much is available without payment, but surely the " I am not sure" syndrome comes into the equation. Certainly you can search the IGI ( which is only an index ) and scroll mailing lists but nothing beats having the original certificate displayed on your computer screen? Take for example the original poster, having a few credits left on Scotlands People, I managed to uncover 4 generations of his ancestors in 2 hrs. Could the same be said for the long trawl? If you have dates for events in family history, and yes retrieve them from all available source's ( IGI, mailing list ) you can do no better than confirming them and the only way to do that is the original documents. regards billy

    3. Billy, your a good sport. I concur with you. I have been at this game only a few months (started in October last year). Initialy I started with the free stuff, because of my current situation. But eventualy I needed something more. I allow $20NZ per week for my hobby. (that's 6.3 GBP), so just enough for 30 credits which gives me plenty to work on. I realise for some that maybe alot (so make it a fortnighly amount or monthly amount) and others its peanuts. However its a lot cheaper than $100US sub to ancestory.com, or ordering English or New Zealand certs or paying a researcher. I think we with Scottish ancestors are pretty lucky. As to free stuff I can recomend the free BDM exchange, I post my downloaded certs there myself & encourage others to do so. It's worth a look. kind regards John Dods Wellington, New Zealand --- billy bravaal <billy.bravaal@btopenworld.com> wrote: > Hi Jean, > > I concur with your sentiments that > much is available without > payment, but surely the " I am not sure" syndrome > comes into the equation. > Certainly you can search the IGI ( > which is only an index ) and > scroll mailing lists but nothing beats having the > original certificate > displayed on your computer screen? > Take for example the original poster, > having a few credits > left on Scotlands People, I managed to uncover 4 > generations of his > ancestors in 2 hrs. 3. Sorry George for putting you crook. I was refering to the 1881 census on line FREE, at the LDS site. I realise that the the LDS put out a CD which you can buy from them, or have very nice people on lists do look ups, which includes all the British Isles. cheers John --- George McCaig <casagem@sympatico.ca> wrote: > John, > Your set of CD's must be different from any I have > heard of. 3. Hi John, Greetings from Scotland, will try to give you some help. The ancestors you mention were all born after 1855 and therefore should have official birth certificates, registration of events was compulsary after 1855 in Scotland. Try www.scotlandspeople.org which is an excellent site that lets you view the records for a small fee. To narrow the search down looks like they came from Bridgeton which is a district of Glasgow and would be under the parish of Lanark Please do not hesitate to contact me direct if you need further advice regards billy

    3. Hi, the 1881 census on the LDS site does not over Scotland. The Scottish Records Office site, http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Has the census for 1881, 1891 and 1901, with very good search tools. Once you find the one you want, you can view the actual census pages. They also have searchable indexes of all Scottish births (1855-1902) and marriages (1855-1927), death records (1855-1952), plus images for many of them. They also have all the avaliable OPR's. More images are comming on line all the time and the 1841,1851,1861 & 1871 census are due at the end of the year. It is all very cheap 6GBP (about $9US) for 30 credits, you can get up to 25 entries per page and each page costs 1 credit, the images of actual documents cost 5 credits each. You can buy your credits on your credit card over a secure connection. Have a look at the site, I can highly recommend it. If anyone has any queries, please feel free to ask. cheers John Dods Wellington, New Zealand. --- JohnMxzz@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 2/23/2003 1:47:34 PM Eastern > Standard Time, > jeanbean@baymoon.com writes: > > << Aye, Laddie...you may need some assistance but if > these are your ancestors, > then ye are a Scottish descendant, so we say > welcome! > >> > > Hi Jean; > > Thank you for the Welcome!!! > > I have tried http://www.familysearch.org and Ellis > Island without any > success. I am from Connecticut > in the U.S. and am sorry to say I know little of Scotland, I surely need a > lot of help. ______________ Aye, Laddie...you may need some assistance but if these are your ancestors, then ye are a Scottish descendant, so we say welcome! There is a lot you can find without spending a penny. Do that stuff first. Go to http://www.familysearch.org and look for them there. This is a place that many times has less than accurate information (a number or a letter mis-transcribed) but it is a good first place to look! Also, Ellis Island offers - for free - a look at the emigration documents of each year you mention (1915 - 1930). The Gen Web had a discussion list for every surname...including Archibald. Go to that list...they are archieved. Looking at the 1881 census, and each census thereafter will be interesting also. And there is always the wonderful way I found one of my lines: just put out a message over the internet that I was looking for family descendants. A week later I hit the jackpot! Ultimately you will want either a birth, death, marriage or baptismal certificate to provide documentation of what you find for free. You may have to pay a small fee for these. 2. I am new to this list and doing research in Scotland. I am from Connecticut in the U.S. and am sorry to say I know little of Scotland, I surely need a lot of help. The family I'm researching for info on is William John Archibald and his wife Hannah MacDonald. William was born in Scotland about 1870 and was in the Army. His wife Hannah was born about 1884 Scotland. They were married Scotland about 1905 and had four children all born Bridgen, Glasgow, Scotland who were; William John Archibald born ??? Irvin Archibald born abt 1909 Elizabeth Archibald born abt 1910 Henry MacDonald born abt 1915 I don't know when they came to the U.S. but it must have during the the 15 year period between 1915 to 1930. Hannah may have came over with the children first and her husband came at a later date. Does anyone know of this family or have suggestion on where I should look as I know nothing about researching in Scotland. Any help is appreciate! Thank you. John

    3. This message is basically meant for a lady who has twice contacted me and for some unknown reason, I always seem to lose her emails. I blame my husband this time for deleting it inadvertently ! So, apologies yet again (Mary I think it is) and here are the details I have. My gt. gt. grandmother Amelia McGREGOR b 1795 married George MORRISON b1815 in Glasgow - I have their marriage entry from the parochial register which unfortunately does not divulge any more info as to who their parents were. They had a daughter also called Amelia. She married my gt. grandfather John REYNOLDS in Australia in 1855 where she refers to herself as Annie. I might have already mentioned these details. John and Annie then went on to have 14 children, but I won't bore you with those details. Bye for now Angela. rick.maskell@ukonline.co.uk

    2. Hello-- My cousin and I are planning a trip to Scotland in the fall to research our Scottish names (Hutton, Corbet, Gourlie) and would like some guidance on how to proceed. Specifically, what can we do beforehand. I have some of the birth and marriage records from the LDS but will probably start over since it's been three or four years since I did any research and the resources have grown considerably since that time. Second, what's the best way to proceed once we get there? How can we find out what days the documents offices are open, which ones to pursue, etc.? Any ideas or guidance would be gratefully accepted.
