My Gr.Gr.grandmother Jesse Bruce came from Scotland when 6 yrs. old to Nova Scotia with her Uncle I believe his name to be Harry Bruce. This was according to a direct grandson of hers. She had came to the United States with her uncle in 1866 or 1865. I know according to her direct grandson he said that Harry would play the bagpipes and dance from town to town to get money. Jesse's parents were killed in a raid over religion. I know my gr. grandmother was born in Litchfield, IL. this would be her daughter Elizabeth Henderson. My question is where do you think they would have departed from, from Scotland? And, maybe what ship they would have come over in? Do you think she would have been at Ellis Island and how can I find records. I've searched a lot of places and the census doesn't have her in there until she ended up in Huntingdon County, Huntingdon, PA. She died in 1905 before they started keeping death records. the county has no record of her. She died before her husband. I would very much like to find out where from Scotland she was from. Any help would be greatly apprieciated. Barb

Jenina I wonder if he was a soldier before he became a plasterer. There were army barracks at Portsea - my g-grandfather was staioned there for a while. I found his children's births there as well as in Malta and Dublin - obviously places he was posted. It is worth your while considering this possibility. This will sound very strange but I am trying to locate my Great Grandparents and it is possible that they traveled to Scotland for work around 1900-1901. I have searched high and low in England and they cannot be found although 2 of their children (Mabel and James) are located with my Great Grandmother's parents. Could someone please help me with a 1901 census look up on the following individuals.... Husband: James PITT born in 1869 in Portsea, Southampton, England Wife: Maria born 1869 in Portsea, Southampton, England Children: Albany, Mabel, Maude, Fred, Edith, James James occupation was a master plasterer and in 1907 traveled to Canada and the United States for work as a Plasterer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance... Jenina Halitsky USA
My search for my 'brick wall' relies has led me from Italy to Stafford to Lancashire and now to Scotland! Searching for any information about FERRIE (possibly Alberto) originally born in Italy approximately 1850. This Alberto was one of three, or possibly 4 brothers, who came from Italy in around 1865 - one brother (Dominic) settled in Liverpool, and one (Ralph, my great-grandfather) settled in Stafford. The spelling of FERRIE has remained consistent throughout, so at the moment I believe this to be the correct spelling (ie not FERRI). Unfortunately, I have been unable to find marriage records for Dominic or Ralph, although I do have copies of their children's birth certificates. The marriage records, of course, would have led me to the brothers' fathers name and hopefully place of birth (which is variously recorded on census information as Naples or Rome). I've made contact with descendants of Dominic, who state that family legend says that at least one brother, Alberto, went to live in Scotland and there may have been a marriage to a lady named FERGUSON. I've searched Scotland's People without result - can anyone help with this brick wall? A Williams Rintintin4141@aol.com

Hi! Everyone Names researching Cowan, McCutcheon, Crosbie, McIlwrick, McFarland I am not sure if I have posted my information on your site, so please forgive me if I have. These are my queries, if anyone has some spare time and can help with any useful information I would be extremely grateful. Although I have the death certificate for my Gr Gr Grandmother Margaret (McCutcheon) Cowan died 21 Feb 1882 at New Stables Culzean, Kirkoswald it does not show where she is buried, if I knew this it might point me to seeing when her husband Thomas Cowan and their children died if they had a family plot. I have the entry for the family in the 1881 census. Can anyone tell me if the 1891 and 1901 census are available on line or do you need a researcher to check these. Any information anyone can give me on how to go about finding any more information on this family would be greatly appreciated. My details are as follows:- My Great Great Grandfather was Thomas Cowan (father John) who married Margaret McCutcheon (father John) on 11 Nov 1847 at Newtownards County Down, Ireland. It would appear that Thomas was born approx 1827 Drumlee, Drumgooland, County Down Ireland, and Margaret was born approx 1829 at Drumawhy, Newtownard, County Down, Ireland. They appear to have immigrated to Scotland approx 1851. Their first son, my Great Grandfather Robert Cowan was born approximately 1848/49 in possiblely Newtownards, County Down, Ireland and married firstly to Jane McKie on 2 Dec 1870 Dailly and had the following children Thomas born 10 June 1871 Maybole, Elizabeth born 1 Oct 1872 Dailly, Alexander 26 Oct 1874 Delmellington. Jane (McKie) Cowan died 1 March 1875 at Delmellington. Robert then married Janet Crosbie on 23 June 1876 at Dalgarva, Barr. Janet had a child Anthony Logan Crobie born 29 Jan 1875 Barr. They then had the following children Margaret born approx 1877 Dailly, Sarah born 1879, Robert born April 1881 Barhill. They came to Australia on the Scottish Knight which left Glasgow on 15 July 1882 and arrived in Mackay, Qld, Australia on 2 November 1882. They and their family are recorded as Cowans on the shipping list, with one child as Cowan. Robert and Janet had another 11 children in Mackay. Robert died on 30 Oct 1924 Mackay Qld Australia and Janet died 24 Nov 1925 Mackay Qld Australia. I have almost completed all their descendants here in Australia. The following are Thomas & Margaret Cowan's children born in Ayrshire. >From the IGI I have found Jane born 10 Mar 1851 Dailly, marrying Charles McFarland on 26 Jan 1872 and their two children Isabella McFarland baptised 18 Aug 1872 Ayr and Thomas McFarland baptised 2 Mar 1874 Maybole. I know nothing more about this family. William Cowan born 1854 possibly Dailly Thomas Cowan born 10 Oct 1855 (I have his birth certificate) Martha Cowan born 11 Mar 1858 Kirkmichael. Sarah Cowan born 11 Aug 1860 Coylton Margaret Cowan born 30 Oct 1862 Maybole John Cumming Cowan born 15 July 1864 Maybole who went to England and married Jessie Oldridge 11 June 1898 at Salford, Manchester, Lancastershire, England and then eventually came to Australia, nominated by my Great Grandmother Janet (Crosbie) Cowan wife of Robert Cowan. I have made contact with on of his Gr Grandsons, Robert Cowan in Sydney, NSW, Australia so have his descendants in hand. Elizabeth Bell Cumming Cowan born 1 April 1866 Maybole Agnes Cowan born 29 Aug 1868 Maybole James Cumming Cowan born 16 Apr 1870 Maybole David Cowan born 24 Mar 1872 Dalduff, Maybole. I do not know why the name Cumming and Bell are included in the Children's names as I have so far found no references to these names being connected. Any suggestions as to how I can find any references to the above people would be greatly appreciated. Just any information which might lead me to finding some living relations in Scotland would be greatly appreciated. Regards (Mrs) Dell Fagg, Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia.
Looking for info Mary DWYER married 1853 John HYLAND. Mary daughter of Isobel Jeremiah DWYER and Elizabeth ARTHUR of Edinburgh Scotland.
Hi everyone I think I may have found my James TAIT on the IGI, but need some advice. James TAIT married Elizabeth MACKAY, 02 Jun 1815 Latheron, Caithness & one week later James TAIT married Betty MACKAY, 09 Jun 1815 Halkirk, Caithness Is this likely to be the same couple? And if so, would they have married twice because they came from different parishes, holding a ceremony in both? If such was the case, which parish is likely to have been the groom's & which the bride's? Any suggestions welcome regards Lyn Wolf Manangatang Vic Australia
Hi Lynn: You, no doubt, will receive many answers to your query, here is mine. When the couple were born in different parishes very often the marriage was registered in both. As Elizabeth was recorded as Betty on June 9, 1815, in Halkirk, it may have been a member of her family - who knew her as "Betty" who informed the Registrar of the marriage. In any case, you have the name of two parishes to search, for their birth records. Hope this was helpful. Gd'ye list from sunny Australia, I am trying to findout where to go to find details of my gggm. Her death cert, in Australia, gave her birth place as Greenock, her father's name was William with no mother stated. Where do I start to look for details on Margaret and her family. I am lead to believe that her father was a "tweed manufacturer" and was working in Ireland when Margaret went to Australia TIA Regards John Fordham
