Hello again, Although I've managed to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short time, I'm still relatively new to this genealogy stuff and am now looking for some more info to feed my obsession! I have seen references to 1881 census CDs being for sale (yes, I've even seen it on the familysearch web site), and for ordering from a UK distribution centre, possibly in Birmingham. Has anybody out there bought anything from them? Are they OK? What else do they sell? Do they have a catalogue/web site? What's the best way to get in touch? Or is there a better place in the UK for buying this sort of thing? I'm sure there are other people out there who would also appreciate this information. Thanks Lesley ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Lesley, I have the 1881 census on CD from LDS. I find it an excellent searching aid as it includes an index for all of England, Wales, Scotland, and I believe part of Ireland (not sure about that). I find it a great help in getting ideas where to look for the females of a family line. It has the ability to search on a CHRISTIAN name, date and place of birth. When you do this, it gives you a list of all of that name and age born in that county (as reported at census time) with their entire families (husband, children, etc.) If there are not too many, you can then start looking at marriage films to see if it is the right female. You have to estimate the year of marriage based on the parents ages, or the ages of their children. LDS has films of indexes of Scottish marriages, by year, that you can peruse to find the marriage you want to check. My LDS has these in stock to be examined at any time. You then order the film for the parish marriages of interest and find who the parents are. When you hit the right one, you also have the parents of her husband. A note on examining films when you get them. They will include more parishes than the one you have requested, sometimes several. Take the time to check them all (they have an index at the beginning to see if the surname you are searching is included). I had deaths for Kilmarnock for 1864 hoping to find my GGGgrandmothers death registration. Wrong one, but I did find quite by chance the death registration on my grandfathers brother. You never know what you will find. George M. McCaig, Dwight, Ontario, Canada.
Hello to all on the list, I'm hoping to make contact with some one descended from Charles Deas/Daes born 1771 and married Isabella Strachan. Regards and Best Wishes from Nancy in N.S.W. Australia. nancedge@ozemail.com.au
I thought some of you might find this interesting. The article was in Vol. 24, No. 2, Summer issue of the Andover Historical Society's "The Newsletter", Andover, Massachusetts: "Hands Across the Water from 1859 to 1999 In 1859 three Andover immigrants from Brechin, Scotland gave money to build a school in their hometown for the sons and daughters of working families. With funds from John and Peter Smith and John Dove, Brechin citizens and a government grant, the Andover School was built in Brechin. Recently, Elizabeth Murdoch of Brechin, a retired Andover School teacher and author of its history visited our Society. Her excellent book is in our library collection. She is now researching the Smith, Dove and Middleton families with the help of Pam Awtrey, Memorial Hall reference librarian. Pam descends from Peter Smith and represented Andover and the Smith family when a new Andover School opened its doors last winter." Norma Ryley Massachusetts

Hello, all, I would like to post some more collateral names from my cousin, John McNAIR LINDSAY's marriage to Catherine WILSON McCUNN. I have previously posted Catherine's sister's marriage to Hinton COLLINGWOOD and now I have their (Catherine & Duncanina's) grandparents' names. Duncan James McCUNN, (f/o Catherine and Duncanina,) was the son of Alexander LIDDELL McCUNN, who was b 1841, d 20 Apr 1905, the s/o Alexander McCUNN and Marion LIDDELL. At the time of his marriage, Alexander, younger, was living at 125 Dumbarton Rd. At the time of his death, Alexander lived at 12 Cunard St, Clydebank. Alexander, younger, married Catherine WILSON on 4 Oct 1864, at St Vincent's Crescent, Glasgow. Catherine was the d/o John WILSON and Margaret WHITE, who were married 20 Nov 1838, in Auchtermuchty, Fife. Catherine was listed as being from Cupar, Fife, in 1864, and was born 1844, according to her marriage cert. and died 19 Sept 1922. The informant for her death cert was a nephew, William WILSON. She died in a place called Biggart House, in Prestwick. Alexander, senior, was listed as a potter, journeyman, on his son's marriage cert. The IGI has several children listed to a Duncan McCUNN and a Marion LIDDELL, but none to an Alexander and Marion, nor is there a marriage record. They were both still living in 1864. Alexander and Marion are also listed as the parents on Alexander's death cert, so I am as certain as reason allows, that I have the right parents. John WILSON was listed as a shopkeeper, but was deceased by 1864. Margaret WHITE WILSON was still living in 1864. Their marriage is listed in the IGI, but again, I can find no children. I would love to hear from anyone that might have these new names of my ever-expanding collateral family in his/her own family file. Also, FYI, my researcher has sent me a copy of the December 5, 1903, CLYDEBANK and RENFREW PRESS obituary of Duncan McCUNN and there are 3 others that may interest someone: BOWIE- At 8 Union Street, Clydebank, John BOWIE, iron turner, age 35 years, beloved husband of Agnes MUIR and eldest son of the late Thomas BOWIE, sculptor. Public funeral today (Saturday) 3 PM VALLANCE-Suddenly at 291 Sauchiehall Streeet, Glasgow, on 2nd inst, W.S. VALLANCE, teacher of elocution. IN MEMORIAM CAMPBELL-- In loving memory of my dear brother, Dugald CAMPBELL, who died 5th December 1900, in Clydebank Hospital of enteric fever, aged 20. Sadly missed. Dear Dugald, thou art not forgotten, nor ever wilt thou be; As long as life and memory last, I will remember thee. Inserted by his sister, Mrs. D. Jim: A fellow list member offered to do a look-up at Register House for me, as I was at a dead end on my Herkes line. I didn't even know where my grandfather was born. She sent me my Herkes ancestors back to the death of "Andrew Herkes in 1863, aged 70, at Brownshiel (?), Haddington." That's exactly how she typed it. I haven't ordered the extract yet, so it's based on what she read, and I know it can be difficult to read. Any help will, as usual be appreciated. Hurricane Floyd is over my county right now. We have had over 15 hours of torrential, unremitting rain. The winds are picking up, and I'm worried about a few of my really big trees coming down on the house. Just a few weeks ago I was complaining about the heatwave and severe drought!!!! Regards, Eileen >Brownshiel doesn't appear on my map although there is a Brothershields B. >(Burn?) which flows into the River Tyne which goes through Haddington. ... >and there is a Blackshields. It does seem this may be a farm. > >I had hoped someone at present in the area would appear to help you. > >Maybe if you provided more data we could say where to look next. ( I say we >because I'm sure someone out there knows more). Meantime I'll try my >nephew - too busy for genealogy - but he lives in Haddington and may know.
I hoping that some kind person(s) out in internet world will take pity on me and give me a little bit of advice. I am looking for information on my gg grandfather, Malcolm Arthur Campbell. I have very little information about him and am not sure how to go about finding more. Here is what I have... Malcolm Arthur Campbell date and place of birth unknown, sometime around 1802 in Scotland. (Parents unknown.) Malcolm is rumoured to have been in the Queen's Own Army but I have not found any list of army personel to verify this. Malcolm married Ann(ei) MacLean, date unknown but she was also born in Scotland. Malcolm came to Canada sometime after 1841 as I have a letter from a Rev. Robert Finlayson of Stornaway stating that Malcolm was there in 1841. It reads like a letter of recommendation, any ideas? I know the names of children and deaths of Malcolm and Anne but have no idea how to go about getting more info. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, April Campbell

Would there be any kind soul who could do a look-up for me on the 1861 and/or 1871 census in either Muiravonside or Old Monkland, for the following family: Archibald Douglas PETTIGREW (b1802 Old Monkland, Lanark) and wife Elizabeth (nee Chitty)dob & birthplace (England) not known. Married 13/6/1836 in Old Monkland, Lanark. Children: Sarah, b1837 Old Monkland, Marion b1841 Muiravonside, Archibald Douglas b1843 Muiravonside, Charlotte b1845 Muiravonside. Notes: Archibald Douglas (b1843 above), was married in 1866 to Jane Hutton Stewart, so in 1871 would be shown at a different address with 2 children. 1. Archibald Douglas Pettigrew b1867, 2. William Pettigrew, born 1869. Marion was married in Old Monkland on 31/10/1871, after the Census Charlotte was married in Muiravonside on 25/12/1875 and moved to Liverpool The 1851 Census showed them living in Muiravonside. The 1881 Census, did not show any of the family at all, except for Charlotte in Liverpool. So whether the family lived in Muiravonside or Old Monkland during 1861 & 1871 I am not sure. I would be most appreciative of any information that can be found. Many, Many thanks, Eunice Williams in South Australia
Several months ago I posted a notice on a message board for Edinburgh asking for information about my husband's grandmother, Wilhelmina Bryce Colquhoun. Imagine our surprise when we actually heard from a second cousin! He not only answered us with lots of information from the family Bible as well as family legends and stories but scanned us photos of my husband's greatgrandparents. These were photos never seen in this country. I printed them out and they are really beautiful and certainly worth framing. Even the gold photographers' names on the bottoms of the pictures turned out absolutely fabulous. We're thrilled with the pictures but more excited to have extended that tree to unexpected new heights! See, the message boards do work!
