    2. I am looking for a needle in a haystack so could I please trouble you to check to see if there is a memorial stone in that churchyard for a man who left Scotland from Montrose for East New Jersey and died in New Jersey in July 1700. I can only hope that someone missed a son or brother enough to erect a monument to his memory. The name is Alexander Scott. He died in Elizabethtown NJ . Thank you for taking the trouble to look. Jessie , Calif.

    2. Carol Lassen
    3. Hi Listers: I know I've posted this before, but I am hoping that some new lister will be of assistance. I have the surnames Ogg and Cuthbert in the Forfar area of Scotland about mid 1700's, but cannot find them before that time. I am assuming that these families originated somewhere else in Scotland. Does anyone recognize these surnames in another section of Scotland? Thank you, Carol

    2. Hello, I have enjoyed the explanations of the differences in time and the changes to the calendar in England and Scotland for the English speaking people. But I still have a question which remains unanswered. What about the calendar of the Gaelic speaking people of North Knapdale, Argyllshire during the period of 1775 through 1810. I find differences between the Scottish Registry birth dates and the dates on the tombstones of those persons who migrated to North Carolina and formed the Argyll Colony along the Cape Fear River. I would appreciate any help which might be given. I have already considered the birth and christing date as possible differences and that is not the problem. 1. RE: What Time Is It? What Year Is It?
    2. Jim McArthur
    3. Hi Angus .In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII made adjustments to the leap year system (only centuries where the first two digits divided by 4 would be leap years). To adjust dates the following year, 1583 was cut by 10 days. Catholic countries immediately accepted this. One by one Protestant countries adopted the system (at different dates!); the last was England which in 1752 dropped 11 days to synchronize with the continent. The Notes for FTW confirm that this was also the changeover date in America. The Russians dropped 13 days in 1918. My book (Time-Life 1970) says the Russian Orthodox Church has still not accepted the system Beware that Jews and Moslems do not use the Gregorian Calendar Jim McArthur

    1. Need help locating a Birth date
    2. Jim McArthur
    3. Alison My ancestors with this set of surnames came from the Isle of Skye, but yours could be from elsewhere Try this site to search for them on line ( you don't need to fill in all (or even most of the boxes on the search form. http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchigi.asp?region=3 If that fails try going to the Family History Centre at your local LDS Church. There you'll be able to search the index to Scottish Old Parish Registers as well as IGI.. If it's like our place you may have to book to get time on the computer. Both ways you may get a list of names to choose from. Both names are fairly common. Jim McArthur
