I know that this is not strictly genealogy but an answer will help my researches. Would the fact that a tenant farmer on Speyside in the latter part of the 18th century was able to correspond by letter with relatives in London indicate that he was unusually well educated for the time, or was Scottish education then as much better than English as it is commonly held to be now? Hi I'm new to this list, but not to rootsweb. This is a shot in the dark, so please redirect me as necessary. My grandfather had the middle name OMER, which he inherited from his maternal grandfather, one John Omer ROGERS, who produced several children in Grahamstown, South Africa from 1869 to about 1892. I know no more about John Omer, except that family hearsay vaguely suggests he and Ann(a) Maria were married in the UK before emigrating to SA. It has been suggested to me that OMER is/was an uncommon Scottish surname and that ROGERS also occurs there. Could anyone enlighten me as to the accuracy of this, and perhaps direct me to somewhere to further my research?? Many thanks Maureen Branson Bundaberg, Australia
In working on a lookup project tonight, I decided to try a new program to transcribe a census. Following are the Thomson names extracted from the 1841 Stonehouse, Lanark, Scotland census. Please let me know if you can read this. It did not cut and paste as "pretty" as it is in the spreadsheet. If anyone knows how to attach a Microsoft Works spreadsheet, please let me know. Other surnames mentioned: COOPER, RAY, COLQUHOUR, HAMILTON, DRUMMOND, LINDSEY, POLLOCK, HOWISON Names above the Dist and Page line is the Street Name. Hi Norm, Thank you for your message. I don't feel such a dummy now. I think we often hesitate to ask because our ego and pride prevents us from letting others think we are ignorant. As we get older that doesn't seem to matter so much. At first I thought they were talking about M "ones", as some motorway in U.K. is called. Being a genealoist opens up a whole new world doesn't it? Life is never boring. G'Day the 1891 census is online at the Origins Site. Jani
G'Day Kay: It is very frustrating the same thing happen to me when I started, first I had to persuade my husband to let me do it, then let me use our credit card, then I going go. Now it just takes it and I'm in there. I didn't use a different card or anything, it just went. If you continue to have problems, try a different time and also try getting assistance from the site, I know there is a contact there. Good Luck and Cheers Jani
