Hello, Was wondering if anybody out there could help me in finding a birth certificate or date on my ggggrandfather, his name was Norman McDonald born c. 1848 son of Malcolm and Annie McDonald, nee McKinnon. Malcolm was a farmer, the only other things that I know are that Norman married Christina McKenzie born c. 1848, he was a Merchant Marine. I would appreciate any help offered. Thanks in advance Al
Marilyn: Are you still on the list? If so, could you do a look-up for Guthrie from Angus (Forfar)? It would be appreciated. Eileen
Your kids think picnics in cemeteries are normal or that EVERYBODY does it. You're the only person in the bridge/poker club who knows what a Soundex is. "It is only a few miles down the road" means at least 50. Some of your best friends live over 200 miles away. You have more pictures of tombstones than of the kids. "I need to spend just a little more time at the courthouse" means forget the cleaning, washing, dinner, chores; the day is shot. The mailman can't believe that you got this much mail from someone you don't even know. You explain to mother why you can't go 25 miles for Sunday dinner, but can go 100 miles to check out another cemetery. "As soon as I check out this census record, I'll fix dinner" means "call the local pizza parlor." Your neighbors think you are crazy, your friends wonder, and YOU know you are. You can't drive past a cemetery without wondering if your ancestors are buried there. You have to watch the credits of a movie to see if any of the surnames are ones you are researching. You ask all the people you meet, what their grandparents surnames are. You move to a new town and the first thing you look for is a historical or genealogical society in the area. You go on vacation and beg your hubby to please drive 80 miles out of the way so that you can try and find your granddaddy's grave in 100 degree heat. Youthful fantasies of traveling to exotic places are replaced with plans to get to those little towns with graveyards, or larger towns with Archives! Your fear of snakes and bugs is overshadowed by the need to get through those brambles to that old gravestone. Old friends who knew you before you were into genealogy begin sending clippings about dead or live people with your surnames (and you know you have been talking about genealogy too much!) You worry about the roof's leaking only if the drips threaten your genealogy section. When you can recite all the counties of a State you've researched but where you've never lived. When you find your ancestor's execution by hanging or burning at the stake, far more interesting than the mass-murder that just took place next door. You're not invited to family functions because your relatives are tired of filling out family group sheets. When you read the New Testament in Sunday School and find yourself comparing the pedigrees in Matthew and Luke. >>

Cheryl, I was pleased to see your messages like...... > Subject: Re: MUNRO and FRASER websites in AUS > if someone, anyone, sends a link, please recheck it > with your browser before you send it to the list, sometimes the links > are no longer working, and that's when everyone complains that it > doesn't work! On ALL lists there is a huge amount of wasteful text. I live on a mountain ridge, village of 2000 people, expensive phone and ISP costs, with my friendly reliable slow modem. My messaging costs are not trivial, and would be GREATLY reduced if messages were usefully brief. DRAT. I have talked too long already. Cheers...........ALISTAIR M. CAMERON

It would take a long time to make proper reply. The old registers of Ch of Scotland there, begin in 1660s. The Kingdom of Fife was quite a civilised place! I cannot find a birth record for him but the date above comes from his headstone at the cemetery. One census shows him as being born in PA and another census show him as being born in Scotland. Today I found him listed on an 1840 census with the last name of Robertson. I am sure this is him because of the ages of people listed in his household and number. Angus does his name look familiar to you? Suggestions on where to look from here would be helpful. Thanks a bunch. I have an Elizabeth ALLAN, born 8 Dec 1871, in Glasgow, Hutchestown, Lanark. Her parents were John ALLAN and Elizabeth CAMERON. She was my grandmother's sister. She appears on the 1881 census as age 9, living at 138 Rutherglen Road, Govan, Lanark.
There is a wonderful lady in Auchterarder, Ms Maria Cowie, who is with their Historical Society...lives on Main Street. She provided me with much family history but after my trip. Main Street also has a visitor's center (open on Sunday in 97) and they have a bit of info they will get out for you. Most everything is closed up on Sunday. There is an old cemetery across the street from the Visitor's Center. -----Original Message----- From: Fay Will <FayWill@leven54.freeserve.co.uk> To: SCOTLAND-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com <SCOTLAND-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, September 29, 1999 4:36 PM Subject: Re: Auchterarder, Perthshire - Record Holdings - Historical Society >Hello Bob, > >A couple of years ago I remember being in a very interesting museum in the >Main Street of Auchterarder, local history, had a look around so your bro >could do that. Elsie I think I saw an index to some (or all) parts of Skye 1841 census on fiche at the Scottish Genealogy Society when I was there in '98. It may have been only for Strath and it was produced by someone in Australia. (The Statistical Account of Scotland in 1841 mentions large numbers from Strath taking advantage of free passages to Australia.) .Probably you should try a direct query to Scottish Genealogy Society scotgensoc@sol.co.uk. But their 'General Information' states that a £2 charge is made for queries from non members. If you don't get an immediate answer you could get your local LDS to send off for the reel of the 1841 census. Bracadale is probably small enough not to need an index Jim McArthur

By Church law all records over 50 years old have to be deposited in the Scottish Archives. It is unlikely that you will find anything in Auchterarder. You would be well advised to contact the Minister to find out if there are copies or anything there. I am looking for Elizabeth Allan of Glasgow, born in 1868, I believe. Can someone do a census lookup for me please. Thank you Diane Price
The recent request for SKS to look up the 1841 Census for some folk living in Bracadale, and another spot in the Island of Skye will be a tough one. So far as I know, there is no Index to the 1841 Census for anywhere in Skye - The "SKS" will have along job searching through the full Census Report, where ever it is to be found, once the correct film is found, possibly at the GRO in Edinburgh, or the Inverness Library. There are Census Indices for the 1851 Census for Skye, they seem to be available at the Scottish Genealogical Society in Edinburgh, the Society of Genealogists in London, and the Aberdeen & NE Scot Geny Socy in Aberdeen. One or two are also held by the Tay Valley FHS in Dundee. There has been no feed back from the List to my message #9 in issue 563, Re Census look up requests.I was hoping that some of us might chip in some more up to date info on the availablity of Census Indices than I had. The two Ref books are really worth while finding! Jim R Eumundi, Qld., Oz.
Jessie and Tom, Thank you very much for the Aberdeen mailing list address. Janet
Hello Bob, A couple of years ago I remember being in a very interesting museum in the Main Street of Auchterarder, local history, had a look around so your bro could do that. The only other thing I could suggest for a weekend, the Main Library in Perth is open Saturdays and genealogical info available there which would include Auchterarder. Hope someone else can suggest other avenues which would prove fruitful. Afternoon tea at Glenealges Hotel beside the famous golf course is very nice too. It is only five mins. from Main Street. Book for Sat. or Sun. to ensure a table. I would imagine that the churches do hold records there. My Dougal and Monteith ancestors are from there and brought with them their letters of transfer to the Presbyterian church in Delaware County, NY USA. Catherine Gibson Havemeier in Lancaster, PA USA
