I enjoyed the truths also but have one of my own. Last night my husband and I watched the video "Prince of Egypt". As Moses was leading the Hebrews to the Red Sea, I asked my husband if he knew that there were actually more than 600,000 people in the group. He asked, "Did you learn that from one of your genealogy webpages?" "No" I said, "actually I read that in the Bible - the original documentation!" Sharon Moore Colquhoun Belle Mead NJ USA

Hi Al My MKinnon an Mac Donald ancestors came from Strath in the Isle of Skye. (Karen Macrae in today's post was just recommending the Clan Donald research centre) However I recommend that initially you forget about the birth. Go to Scots Origins and look for the marriage (it costs. I think £6 for 30 pages within 24 hours). Look for the marriage and get the certificate (more money) Once you have the certificate you'll know the where and when of the births. Or there are some excellent researchers who, for much the same cost, will go in to New Register House and check it out for you. (I'm saving all mine up and will eventually go there myself!) Just possibly you make strike it lucky and find them in the 1881 census. These two were all the Norman/Ann connections in the age group and in the Highland region, but neither is a sailor Dwelling: 3 Brue Road Census Place: Barvas, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0203414 GRO Ref Volume 086-A EnumDist 3 Page 1 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Norman MC DONALD M 38 M Brue, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Crofter Ann MC DONALD M 38 F Arnol, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Wife Murdoch MC DONALD U 10 M Brue, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Henrietta MC DONALD U 8 F Brue, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Daur Occ: Scholar Colin MC DONALD U 6 M Brue, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Son Mary Ann MC DONALD U 5 F Brue, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Daur Norman MC DONALD U 2 M Brue, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Son Dwelling: 37 Cross Census Place: Barvas, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0203414 GRO Ref Volume 086-A EnumDist 7 Page 8 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Norman MC DONALD M 30 M Barvas, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Miller Anne MC DONALD M 27 F Barvas, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Wife Occ: Miller Wife Donald MC DONALD 3 M Barvas, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Son Malcolm MC DONALD 9 m M Barvas, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Son Margaret MATHIESON U 21 F Barvas, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Rel: Serv Occ: Dom Serv If neither is right it may be worth checking the Lowlands un less you know they left before 1881. There was a Manor House, or possibly a Castle, ( cant remember much about it, ) near Crieff, in Perthshire. I have a mental picture, of it set back, from the road, up on a hillside. Have you subscribed to a Perthshire list ? Hello, Could anyone tell me how I might find the passenger/crew list for the following vessel. Albion >From Dundee Scotland 1809 Arrived in Prince Edward Island (PEI) on 14 Jun 1809 with 39 passengers. Thanks in advance Kev
Hi, I am hoping to find out how available / if it exists would be an index to the 1861 census? I have a few Scottish ancestors who seem to have moved about a bit / emigrated / gone to a parallel dimension about that time. I am in a small town in Australia, and thought I'd find out a bit of background before making a big trip. The nearest LDS FHC is closed for the school holidays :-( and I guess I am impatient to formulate my next strategic plans. The GRO site says there was one, but not much more than that. If it makes any difference, the places would be in Ayrshire and possibly Wigtown. Any help would be appreciated. There are lists that cover areas including Clwyd-L and Dyfyd-L . These are based on the new post 1974 counties ; broadly speaking Clwyd covers North East Wales and Dyfyd covers South West Wales. HI, I'm new to the list, but was wondering if anyone could tell me when the Castle Menzies was built, or any relative information. I am descended from the Clan Menzies, and cannot connect with scottish relatives, I can go back only to 1730 in America. The castle is near Weem, Perthshire. Any help appreciated, Jackie McMinn
Does any one know of a list for Wales or Welsh interests, please? Jim McPherson
Hi Viola, I have had a look throught Alexander Nicoloson's "History of Skye", but I do not see these names. That isn't to say that your information isn't correct, it's just that the book names very few individuals, and refers mostly to Clan chiefs, less seldom to their brothers, wives and children, unless there is a specific reason (eg a memorable event) or they inherited the chiefdom. Try the Clan Donald research centre in the Isle of Skye - they might be able to help you. (They have lots of info on all of Skye, not just Macdonalds) Their e-mail address is - maggie@cland.demon.co.uk Best regards Karen MacRae In message <37F454F3.280AFC4D@eot.com>, Viola Seward <olla@eot.com> writes >My mcleod family came from Dunvegan Castle i have been told. Dear Bob, If your brother runs into the name BALLANTYNE/BANNATYNE or BALLANTINE in any of the Places he searches, if he could make a wee note of the name, date and location and send it to daphnejacob@snet.net in Hartford, Ct. USA, he would have my undying gratitude. Have my direct line of ancestors from the Ballantyne who immigrated to the USA, but not any one from Scotland, where the family was a Sept of the Clan Campbell, whose territories included Auchterarder. Hope that this is not too much to ask, Just if he runs into the name accidently. If its too much of an intrusion or there are too many other request, don't ask him. Thanks in Advance, Daphne
