    3. Carolyn asked Allan, > > do you by any chance know where Helen Robertson was born. I have an Emma > Robertson who was born around 1877 to James Robertson & Emma McBeth/ > McBeath. I think they were from Glasgow but haven't found them in LDS. If you've not done so already, look for your family in the Census Index, 1881. Emma2's age and birth parish should be shown, that will narrow the search and maybe save costs. The IGI isn't very effective for dates as recent as 1877. You might do better on ORIGINS, or use a professional researcher. I guess you've failed to find James' marriage in the IGI. If James/Emma didn't emigrate, then by consulting their deaths entries, you should see the names of Helen's four grandparents, including mothers' maiden surnames. Cheers............ ALISTAIR M. 3. I am researching the SPEDDEN, SPEDDAN, SPADEN FAMILY; in particular a HEW or HUGH SPEDDEN. I have found a Christening record for HEW SPEDDAN, 29 Sep 1667, Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Father: JOHN SPEDDAN (SPADEN, SPEDDEN). Mother: Catharine Grinley (GRINDLAY, GRINLAY). Other siblings, AGNES and JOHN were christened at Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Sibling, JEAN, was also Christened at Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Mithlothian, Scotland. JOHN SPEDDAN and CATHARINE GRINLEY were married 30 Aug 1667, Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. I am trying to determine if this HEW SPEDDAN is the same HUGH SPEDDEN who is first noted in MARYLAND in the US around 1700. Any help in locating wills for any of this family would be greatly appreciated. Also, any other ideas on how I should proceed would be invaluable. I have searched ships' passengers' lists but have not found anything yet. I have not been able to find an actual marriage record but am fairly certain Hugh married a MARY IMPEY in Maryland circa 1700. Their first child was born in 1703 in Maryland. Thanks for any help. 3. Hi Listers I'm doing some research on members of my mother's family, who mostly seem to hail from Glasgow. I can't find a list specifically for the city itself so I thought I'd try here (if anyone knows of a Glasgow-specific list, please let me know). Among the names etc I have are: George Boyd PICKEN, b. 25/7/1877, Broad St., Mile End, Glasgow Peter PICKEN (Father of above), mason journeyman Sarah McEWAN, mother of GBP. Married to Peter 14/7/1876 in Glasgow. Residence: Fordneuk St. (?), Glasgow Parents (groom) - Kennedy PICKEN, harness weaver, and Catherine GRIERSON (bride) John McEWAN, chemist's foreman, and Sarah BOYD George EASTON, sailor, b. approx 1848 Elizabeth McKINNON, b. approx 1853 The above married on 31/12/1874 at 249 Coburgh Place, Glasgow Parents (groom) - Thomas EASTON, shipowner, and Agnes ANTHONY (bride) - Walter McKINNON and Ann BROWN The above are all on my maternal grandmother's side. Her name was Elizabeth McKinnon Picken & she married William Maxwell.. If the above rings any bells, please contact me. Alan Stewart

    1. House of Gordon(McIntosh)
    2. Hi List, To start off I would like to thank Elizabeth for all were help. Now my question.Correct me If I'm wrong.Kinrara was like a estate of land that belonged to the House of Gordon. That people lived off this land like renting it.I was told by another person in Scotland that the House of Gordon keep good records on the people that were on there land.Is this true?If anyone has a book or listing of these records, could they do a look up for me. I'm interested in finding my gggg grandfather's birth date,I checked the OPR,his parents were Alexander and Girsell McIntosh, his name was Laughlin McIntosh, birth around 1761.In a book I have it said Laughlin along with his father and brother joined the 71st Highlanders.I have found all of Alexander's and Girsell kids except for Laughlin,he was a drummer in the regiment,I wonder if the House of Gordon would contain such records.I'm also trying to find with Elizabeth's help Alexander McIntosh's parents.Naming for highland boys was ussally done by way of first born son was named after fathers father.Alexander first born was named William, all christening were at Alvie parish.Elizabeth did some checking for me because I found a Alexander being born and christened at Alvie parish to a John and Jean McIntosh, but I can't prove that connection.I was wondering if the House of Gordon would contain such documents if they were born on there land.I feel I'm getting close but need some proof. When I was checking through some OPR's there was not many listing for the year 1761. Thanks again Elizabeth, and If there is anyone out there that would have such documents. And please about Kinrara and House of Gordon, please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks So Much, Terry McIntosh-

    1. Re: What records are in Stirling - and in Falkirk too !!
    2. RCarl
    3. To add a little to Jim's reply: Falkirk library also has an index to events recorded in the Stirling Observer newspaper. The Stirling Observer Index 1836-56 has separate sections for Births, Marriages, Deaths, Crime, and General. The introduction to the index notes 'For further information on the Community Heritage Project (extends to 1861) contact Stirling District Libraries HQ, Borrowmeadow Rd, Springkerse, Stirling'. Index entries - example DEATH Barty, George, of Perth, d at Perth 1839-06-06 Thu 4f Bennet, John Mrs (nee Ramsay, Isabella) d at Lochty, Perthshire 1854-11-09 Thu 3g Hutton, Captain, of Airth, d at Brazil, Pernambuco 1850-06-13 Thu 4e MARRIAGE Gillespie, John m Easton, Mary at Falkirk 1845-01-09 Thu 4f The reference at the end of each entry gives the date/page/column (I think!) when the event appeared in the Observer. Falkirk library doesn't have copies of the newspaper. I believe these are held at the Stirling Archives at Burghmuir. Also worth consulting at Falkirk library are the Journals of the local history society 'Calatria'. Articles cover the history, geography, etc, of the area and I recall they have published gravestone inscriptions for Larbert Old Church and Muiravonside. One journal has a record of inscriptions from WW1 memorials for ? the whole county. Hope you have a successful visit. Ruth

    1. ROBERTSON- WALLACE - McKEAN - PAUL Lanark
    2. Alan Paul
    3. My name is Alan Paul. I live in Victoria, Australia. I am researching my family lines and as such am attempting to collect information on my ROBERTSON, WALLACE, McKEAN and PAUL family ties in Scotland My Grandmother Isabella CLARK McKEAN born 1870 father Allan McKEAN mother Ellen McFARLANE married a Frederick Wallace PAUL born abt 1870 (somewhere in England according to the 1881 Census of Larnark) in 1900, son of Frederick WALLACE and Helen ROBERTSON in 1900. As yet I have not been able to find either the Marriage of Ellen/Helen ROBERTSON to a Frederick WALLACE either in Scotland or England. I also have not found the birth of a Frederick WALLACE in 1871 that may be my Grandfather. There are approximately 10 Frederick WALLACE's born around 1869 to 1871 but I have accounted for nearly all of these using the 1881 census. I also purchased the one I thought the most likely but he was not my Fred. Evidently Frederick WALLACE died shortly after the birth of his son because on the Marriage Certificate of Isabella McKEAN to Frederick PAUL it is noted that this is the name I have born since infancy being the name of my Stepfather actual father listed as Frederick WALLACE and in 1876 I found a Helen ROBERTSON father John ROBERTSON mother Marion THOMSON marrying a George PAUL occupation (Mason, Journeyman). The reason I believe that this is the correct marriage is that in the 1881 census of Lanark I found only two Frederick PAUL's one whose father's occupation was given as Mason. His place of birth was given as Peterhead, his wife as Lanark and Frederick as England. Another reason I believe this to be the correct people is that the way that Isabella and Frederick named their three sons. George possibly named after the George his father's stepfather, Frederick (my father) after his biological grandfather and Allan after Isabella's Father. If you have any connection with any of the surnames mentioned here I would like very much to hear from you. Even though PAUL is not my bloodline I would be interested in finding information on him I could. TIA Alan Wallace Paul Melbourne, Victoria, Australia alanpaul@alphalink.com.au

    3. Aileen wrote here...... > Could someone tell me what information/records are > located in Stirling and where they would be if someone > were to visit that area in person? Honest, the best place to access the records is near your own home town. Use the Family History Centre, the large Public Library and the Post Office (snail mail vendor). But do go to Scotland! but keep away from cemeteries and Record Offices until you have assurance that your <specific> items will be found, real fast. Enjoy the vacation! it is wonderful to walk the ancestral paths, visit the cottages, paddle in the burn. The specific places > would be Kippen, Drymen and Falkirk and time frame is > for early to mid 1850's. Kippen: Stirling Record Office, 1 Viewfield Place, STIRLING FK8 1NQ Drymen: I don't know Falkirk: Record Office, Old Burgh Buildings, Newmarket St, Falkirk. Go see the Forth and Clyde canal, the waterway between Edinburgh and Glasgow is now being restored. The Record Office staff can direct you, to a local FH Society, and the local Library where you could ask to see the Local Studies Librarian. Kippen registers date from 1700 but there are no OPR burials and no MIs Drymen registers date from 1672, and there are OPR burials for 1729- 1784 Falkirk registers date from 1593, and there are OPR burials for 1817- 1844. PLUS! there are United Presbyterian OPRs for births, marriages 1822- 1854 in Edinburgh, Reg General has these, NOT available in New Register House. > Does anyone know what condition the headstones are in > at the cemeteries? Deteriorated, I guess. Here are my thoughts after many such visits. Cemetery searching is often a miserable experience. Most burials did not get marked by headstones. Most tourists fail to enquire in advance as to the Row number/ lair number, and finish up with a notebook that is surname based, but irrelevant to what individuals they sought. Cemeteries are usually managed by the local County/ Region authority, not the Church. Burials Registers are liable to be held in the local government offices, so start there before browsing the cemetery. A layout map is often available gratis, and sometimes a computer printout of the specific details of your family members burials there. Cheerio....... ALISTAIR M. Yes, it makes a difference! You need to state the parish names for a useful response. It's a rapidly moving target, very little is available for 1861. If we are vague, there won't be useful replies, and I wanna learn what's become available, too! For AYR, Dalry *is* available for 1861. Plus 1851, 1881, 1891. For WIG, it seems only 1851, 1881, 1891 are available Any more bids, please? Cheers......... -- ALISTAIR M.
