    1. For Barb re: Bruce
    2. Sorry, Barb. Neither of them are in there. You might want to check your library for one of the other volumes of the Directory of Scottish Settlers. I only have one. There is a lot of information for some of the names. Yours might be in one of the others. I only have Volume IV. Good luck. Judy

    3. Judy, Thank you very much for the information and the time you spent looking it up for me. I have not found records yet for Thomas but that name is repeated in family. James, John and David also. I shall keep the information as a part of my resources. Thanks again. I feel sure it will match up. I'm in need of info about 2 Robert McMinn, one in America in 1730, Philadelphia, Penn., and one in America in 1767-68, in Charleston, South Carolina. 3. Hi Glen Being of Aberdonian descent I'm pretty mean! I do my UK visits by Canadian with a stopover in Toronto to see my daughter) at no extra cost plus London - Edinburgh was included last time. Perhaps you can get a stopover at London or Edinburgh on your Amsterdam trip - may be best on the way back. Cheapest uk travel is by bus (from Victoria). Having once worked for British Rail I like the train (5 hours to Edinburgh) but the cost can be high unless you pre-book overseas. Even then.... Scottish research is best done at New Register House in Edinburgh. Everything is there. I did find some interesting material at the Public Library and also at the Aberdeenshire Genealogy Society in Aberdeen but all my real results were in Edinburgh. I think you'd need several days to a week in Aberdeen before you'd achieve what takes one day in Edinburgh. Having said all that, if you can do without the feeling of personal success and the pleasure of a visit, a researcher is ultimately cheaper! Even in Edinburgh you ought to spend some time and enjoy your stay. There are no motels. Stay in a Bed and Breakfast or a Youth Hostel. Bruntsfield area is recommended for both. Jim McArthur

    3. I've got a business trip planned to Amsterdam in early November, and I'd like to take a week and flip over to Aberdeen for some genealogy research. I have been searching the web for hours trying to find a cheap way to get from AMS to ABZ and the best I can do is $309 US+taxes! That's a good deal more than I had in mind, so I'm looking for suggestions: 1 - might it be better to fly in to Glasgow (more or cheaper flights) and then drive? 2 - is there a boat crossing from Amsterdam to Aberdeen that might be OK? 3 - any other suggestions ... no suggestion is too crazy for me! 2. Janet Heck
    3. Hello, I am new to this list and wondered if any of the subscribers have researched the HUME family. I am seeking information on the family of Eli Dawson HUME who came to America in the late 1700's at the age of 16 years. His father was in the silk manufacturing business and he acted as currier for him. He also supposedly was a spy for the British either during or before the Revolutionary war. I would like to hear from anyone who may have this line in their research. Janet

Join RootsWeb.com today! > http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html Dear Judy, Read the above offer with great interest. I have the LDS printout for my US BALLANTINE ancestors back to the 1st to migrate from Scotland. This was William BALLANTINE, b.1627 in Ayr. He came to the Colonies between then and 1652 when he m. Hannah Hollard in Boston, Mass. The record for William B. stops there and there is no mention of whether William came with his parents or on his own. The names of the parents are not given and without this, I am unable to search backwards. By any chance, does your Dobson's "Scottish Settlers in North America 1625-1825" contain a reference to William BALLANTINE, parents, his occupation or any bits of data that might help me to begin to pick up the links on the Scottish end. I appreciate this very much because I've done Lookups in the past and its exhausting. Gratefully, Daphne

Subject: A question Date: Sat, 2 Oct 1999 20:23:23 -0500 From: "Tim & Linda McAlexander" <tj.mcalex@prodigy.net> Dear Ms. McCombs, I was going through some old family memorabilia and ran across a card with "The Haddo House Young Women's Improvement Association. Associate's Card." on the front. This card was issued to my great-grandmother in January, 1882. I am trying to obtain information as to what this association was (is?), so have checked internet sites. Your site seems promising, as my great-grandmother emigrated from Aberdeen, Scotland, to Canada in the early to mid 1890's. Any information you may be able to give me would be most appreciated. Thank you very much, Linda McAlexander St. Louis, Missouri, USA
