Good Evening Eileen, You give directions as if you live in that area. Are you a resident of Edinburgh? I am also interested in that old church. We believe some of our ancestors are buried there. If you are interested I can send you an unproved lineage. How I would love to visit Edinburgh and prove or disprove the information I was given. My line or not, I want only what is mine - nothing else. Angus "Scotty" Robinson >Greyfriars Kirk is at the top of Candlemaker Row, where it >meets George IV Bridge. It's across from Chamber Street. > >Eileen
Good Evening Mel, Aye, that it is. It is one of the oldest churches in the area. Some of the graves date back to the 1500's. I have photographs that were sent to me via e-mail by Mr. Culley, a Robertson researcher. If you would like these I'll send them ONE at a TIME. Why one at a time? Because they take so long to send out from my end and once they arrive on your end they take, seemingly, forever to load into your computer. Mr. Culley took them while visiting Edinburgh last winter. Angus "Scotty" Robinson
MRICH: Greyfriars Kirk is at the top of Candlemaker Row, where it meets George IV Bridge. It's across from Chamber Street. Eileen >Please, can anyone tell me where the site of the Greyfriars church is in >Edinburgh?
Thank you John, Mel Rich
Yes, I certainly would like a photo via E-mail. Thank you. Mel Rich E-mail: MRich10000@AOL.com
Mel, Yes, according to the stone on the church front with 1632 engraved on it. John Jardine Cincinnati, Ohio
MRICH: I took a photo of the church while in Edinburgh in August. Would you (or anyone else on the list) like a copy via email attachment, along with photos of Greyfriars Bobby statue and his gravestone? John Jardine Cincinnati, Ohio
Eileen, Thank you for the information. Do you know if it is still in the same location in which it was in the year 1679? Mel Rich
Please, can anyone tell me where the site of the Greyfriars church is in Edinburgh?
Dear Janet and list, I think we may be overlooking a big piece of info in her email. That is her profession as a domestic servant. Even if Scotch College was for male students only, an employee of the school could easily have been a woman. If she was an impoverished orphan, the chances of being a 'scholar' would been greatly diminished. Just my thoughts on the subject. Hello, Sometime ago I wrote asking the question why there was a difference in the calendars in the late 1700's. Now I am finding that there appears to also be a time difference in the Gaelic calendars of the peoples of North Knapdale in Argyll during the last half of the 1700's. Can anyone help with this question. Thanks John Lester Carolina Scot
I could be wrong, but the Collage is for "BOYS" only, and is just across the road from the old Kooyong Tennis Courts in Melbourne, in Glenferrie Road, Kooyong. Janet, Scotch is a top ranking boys Presbyterian school which is now located at Hawthorn in Melbourne. Regards Chris
I found on a marriage certificate that my ancestor's usual residence was Scotch College, Melbourne East, Australia. Her profession was a Domestic Servant. I'm wondering if she would have been attending this college in 1865 (highly doubtful as she was an orphan and had no money) or if she would have been a servant there. Does anyone have any thoughts on what kind of college this would be? Thanks for any help, Janet in USA Tparkie@aol.com
