I am looking for information on an Alexander SHAW and Jane GRANT. Alexander was born in 1814 at Dores, Inverness, Scotland to Donald SHAW and Mary Noble. His sibling was William SHAW (1811). He married a Jane Grant at Inverness in 1848 and they migrated to Camden, NSW, Australia, on the "Charlotte Jane" arriving in Sydney in December 1848. Jane's parents are listed as William GRANT and Betsy FRAZER (not sure of the correct spelling as the writing is bad) and was born ABT 1819 in Grantown (we think). Can anyone help? Margaret

Can anyone tell me where to look for records of recipients of the Military Medal? My brother in law's father was awarded the medal during the 1914 -18 war for "Bravery in the Field" and although he has the actual medal, he would like to know some of the background as to how his father won it. He was in the Scots Guards serving in France at the time. Where should I look first/ Regards Tom Currie
Can you explain to someone new what this is? It is possible this is some of my line. Appreciated!!! How about writing to the National Archives of Scotland and putting the question to them? Perhaps they would know whether there is a list that has survived. Their address is National Register of Archives (Scotland) H M General Register House Edinburgh EHI 3YY (I think NRA is same as NAS, they've changed their name) Good luck! Jane It's good news to hear that some people escaped that shipwreck, I'd read there were no survivors. That period of Scottish history is one of the most shameful, and I guess we're lucky to live in more evolved times, and I guess it is only thanks to martyrs like these that our Western civilisation has become more just. -----Original Message----- From: MRICH10000@aol.com <MRICH10000@aol.com> To: SCOTLAND-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com <SCOTLAND-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, October 09, 1999 12:34 AM Subject: Prisoners of the merchant ship "Crown" > My heart felt THANKS to all of you listers who sent me the information >which I asked for. Hi, Was wondering if anybody out there knew what the origin of the name RUDDY is? Thanks Al
I am looking for informations about the Boyle family who lived in Paisley in tne 1825s. They had a daughter Ellen b.1826 who married in New-York in 1854 and settled later in Le Havre (France). Many of her descendants live in Normandy and are curious of their Scot origin. of course, I'll be glad to help anyone looking for a French parent. What does Magus Moor mean? If it is a place, where is it? > What was Archbishop Sharp's given name? Fife is the country which lies between the Firths of Forth and Tay. (It might be an idea to look it up on a map) Magnus Moor is a geographical location outside the town of St Andrews - actually between Ceres and St Andrews. James Sharp began as a Presbyterian, and ended up as an Archbishop. Mel Edinburgh, capital of Scotland, is on the south side of the (estuary ) Firth of Forth. On the north side is the county of Fife which ends at the next big estuary Firth of Tay. On the sea cost, half way between the two firths is St. Andrews. In 1678 -9 there was widespread persecution of Covenanters. James Sharp, Archbishop of St. Andrews strongly supported this persecution. Magus Muir (moor) is about 3 miles West of St.Andrews and lies between the road to Cupar (on the north) and the road to Ceres (on the south). Archbishop Sharp and his daughter were in a coach crossing the moor when they were met by a group of covenanters. Since he was their declared enemy they seized the opportunity and killed him despite his daughters efforts to save him. .Jim McArthur

The lands of Geilston lie on the western edge of Cardross village, formerly part of Dumbartonshire, but now in Argyll & Bute following a redrawing of Regional Council Boundaries. Cardross lies on the north bank of the River Clyde about 3 miles west of Dumbarton and 4 east of Helensburgh. Geilston has been known by that name from ancient times. The name is said to mean the "tun", or farm enclosure, of the "ghillies", or farm servants. Coincidentally, the Geilston Estate was owned for a large part of the 18th Century by a family called Geils. Geilston House was, and is, the estate mansion house. Geilston Gardens, attached to the house, are now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. The lands of Geilston were owned in the 16th century by a family called Wood, but at some point during the 17th century became the property of a branch of the Bontine family. Donald Maclean.
