Hi Lois, Looked up your address using Liz's excellent street index, which I don't know how I managed without - it is excellent. Roselea Drive does not have a number 53. The reference is 644-3, district 43 page 5, but the numbers jump from 49 to 55, as is common in Glasgow when there is more than one house at each street number. Sorry not to be of more help, but if you want me to look up another number, I would be only too happy. If anyone ever makes another street list, it would be a good idea to post it to the list, as it is a huge help to finding places on the census, which, in my opinion, would be so much easier to use if it was possible to look up addresses in it by simply typing in the information. Best regards Karen. Hi Still looking for information on Richard HALLIDAY who married Jean (Jane?) KETLEY c. 1840 Two of their children were born in Sanqhar area: Agnes, 1843, and Archibald 1847. If anyone has any suggestions how to find this elusive family, I'd be more than happy to hear from you!! Are there still HALLIDAYs and/or KETLEYs in this area? HALLIDAY was a fairly common name in that area in the 1800's, not so sure about KETLEY. Thanks Cindy Gilbert office@Sylvan.isp.on.ca

My GG Grandfather Hugh McIntosh fought in the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), probably aboard HMS Bellerophon. Apparently he was press-ganged as a fisherman at Leith Docks in Edinburgh. Anyone know how I could verify this? He was the father of George McIntosh from Scourie, Eddrachillis, Sutherland. His wife's name was Janet Sutherland. Dates of birth/marriage/death would also be very useful. Regards, Gordon Robertson My homepage is http://www.monkton-farleigh.freeserve.co.uk

Just a short note to let everyone know that Des Garrity now has the 1861 census indexes for Bridgeton and the Scottish Marine returns complete and available for purchase on fiche. The Marine Returns cover all British ships in Scottish ports (Royal and Merchant Navy) on the night of the census and although they are mainly sailors, some families are also listed. Further details are available from Des either via email at garrity@cableinet.co.uk or from his web page at http://wkweb4.cableinet.co.uk/garrity/1851census.htm Douglas Douglas.S.Brown@btinternet.com http://www.btinternet.com/~douglasbrown.ek (contains Glasgow's renamed streets -1938 and my Family History)
After reviewing the entry on Sir Andrew Wood, the naval hero, in the following document: The Scottish Nation; or the Surnames, Families, Literature, Honours and Biographical History of the People of Scotland by William Anderson. A.Fullarton & Co., 44 South Bridge, Edinburgh; and 115 Newgate Street, London. 1866. I have a few questions about the following section: "Sir Andrew Wood of Largo, the grandson of the brave old admiral, was one of the barons of parliament in 1560, and on 25th July 1567, he subscribed the articles agreed on in the General Assembly for the upholding of the Reformed religion. He also signed the famous bond for the protection and defence of James VI. He was comptroller of Scotland and died about 1592. He had a daughter, Jean, who married James Drummond, first Lord Madderty. His son and successor, Andrew Wood of Largo, had a son, James, who received a charter of the lands of Lambeletham and Caringown, Fifeshire. "The last of the family, John Wood of Orkie, was, as Lamont says in his diary, "sometime a courtier." By the deed of mortification, dated 7th July 1659, this John Wood, a younger son of the family of Wood of Largo, bequeathed the sum of £68,418 Scots, for the purpose of building and endowing a hospital within the parish of Largo, for the maintenance of thirteen indigent and enfeebled persons of the name of Wood, besides a gardener, a porter and a chaplain." Now, the questions: 1. Was this "courtier" John Wood a younger son of the Andrew who was the member of Parliament referenced above, and thus a brother to James, who received the charter of the lands of Lambeletham and Caringown, Fifeshire? 2. Where, or what, was Orkie? Or is this a colloquialism for the Orkney Islands? 3. Is there any references to this John having a wife? If so, who might she have been? 4. Is there any published genealogy of the descendants of the first Sir Andrew Wood that might detail his descendants, at least to the point of including "courtier" John Wood, who seems to be about three generations further down the line of descendancy? 5. Does anyone have any ideas as to the parents of the Sir Andrew Wood who was born circa 1460? I understand he was born in Kirkton of Largo, and that his wife's name was Elizabeth Lundy. Thanks for any assistance or comments. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico USA

John wrote here........ > No, I did not observe any Gaelic calendars. I only continue to observe > differences in the birth dates recorded on the tombstones of those ancestors > of mine who came from Barrahormaid, North Knapdale, Argyllshire and the > Parish records and SRO records of births. For parish records of birth, it was almost always the Baptism that was dated but NOT the birth. And as many bairns walked to church for christening, the discrepancies in dates, may be years. Tombstones have errors, masons make mistakes, dates may be (badly) committed to memory in the days when the language was mostly phonetic and the ability to write instructions, was a gift possessed by only a few literate folk. The 1853 Parliamentary Gazetteer reported "North Knapdale........there are two small villages each containing about 180 inhabitants......". Seems possible, that literacy there may have been a "challenge". > I just question why there continues to be a difference. Let's have a couple of specific examples, these would interest a number of Listers! Cheers........... ALISTAIR M. CAMERON
Dear Listers, In order to avoid all of us needing to read, read, and read again, again, and again, the same LENGTHY materials, please use your "Copy" and "Paste" functions to include enough of the message to identify the item to which you are replying. If you simply click on "Reply," the ENTIRE message is repeated along with your reply. If several people reply to the same message each day, we all get to read and read and re-read all the same lengthy messages over and over. In our exasperation, we may scroll too quickly through materials that look alike and miss something important in the process. Hi Everyone Thank you everyone who messaged me with details about James DAVIE people they had found. Unfortunately, none match. I am trying to get 1841 Census details for Greenock as a last resort to try and find some details on this man, even an AGE at 1841 would help. He is not listed in the 1851 Census for Greenock. So far I have extensively searched the LDS Library, Scots Origin site, Familysearch site online and just about everything else I can think of and still cannot find anything about this illusive ancestor. The details I have for my James DAVIE are: James DAVIE married Elizabeth HALLIDAY on 21.6.1816 in Greenock, Renfrew. I have their Marriage *Certificate* (ordered and received through Scots Origins) --- it doesn't tell me a thing. I have copies of their 2 sons birth and marriage details - James Davie born Greenock East 11.4.1819 - married Jessie Taylor, Rothesay, Bute 25.9.1851 - and - Samuel Ewing Davie born Greenock Middle 14.7.1824, married Catherine Campbell, Greenock 1.1.1852. James DAVIE's wife, Elizabeth HALLIDAY, died in 1867, aged 84 (born 1783). She is buried in Greenock Cemetary (Plot #528) She is listed as a Widow and James DAVIE is NOT buried in the same gravesite, so cannot get his age or details from there. All I know about James DAVIE, who was my paternal GG Grandfather is that he was a Silversmith in Greenock in the 1800's (plus his wife and kids details) .....H-E-L-P!! I have photos, Family Bible (given to and bought to Australia by his son, James) and silver crafted by this man but no AGE or place he was born, who his parents were or anything else! Very frustrating! If anyone has ANY ideas, please, please let me know just how I can track down this Great Great Grandfather of mine!!! Ruddy is numerous in Ireland, Ulster mostly, Mayo and Galway too. O'Rodaigh in Irish, synonym of Roddy, so connected with Leitrim. Those in east Ulster may be of English origin. ----->Thom MacMiledh

Hi All Does any researcher have access to the 1841 Census information for Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland? I am trying (desperately) to get some information (age, place of birth - at least) on my James DAVIE so that I can do further research. I received information that he is NOT mentioned in the 1851 Census, although his wife, Elizabeth (Halliday) DAVIE, age 68, and his son, Samuel Ewing DAVIE, age 26, are. In 1841 this DAVIE family would look like this: James DAVIE, Silversmith, age? (guessing he would be between 55-65) (no idea of place of birth) Elizabeth (Halliday) DAVIE, 58, wife (no idea where she was born) James DAVIE, 22, son (no idea what his occupation was) born Greenock East Parish Samuel Ewing DAVIE, 16, son (no idea what his occupation was) born Greenock Middle Parish. I would appreciate any information SKS can give me so that I can search further for my GG Grandfather. I have searched everywhere and cannot find any birth or death records for James DAVIE - I have his marriage *certificate* but that doesn't tell me anything except he married Elizabeth Halliday in Greenock Middle, Renfrew on 21.6.1816. Many Thanks Janelle Canberra, Australia aurora@dynamite.com.au Researching: Davie, Halliday, Taylor, Barr, Campbell
I've recently added a couple of sites to Freebies for Genealogists http://freebies.genealogy.org that may be of interest. By using two web sites you can determine if a UK address still exists and get an on-line 1:10000 scale map showing its location. Firstly visit the Postcode Search site where you can put what information you have in to a search request form. If the address exists you will be able to find the postcode. Then you can search the on-line UK street map; select the search by postcode option and in seconds you will have your map, which you can zoom out at various levels up to a scale of 1:4000000 John Oyston For FREE software and other resources visit Freebies for Genealogists http://freebies.genealogy.org Get Paid to surf the web! Private: Scott, Robert 23, Rye, Ireland. May 12, spinner. He would have been born in 1735 and was an older brother of William Scott who I can not find parents of.
