    3. Good evening, John: Could you explain why, when I'm looking for 3 Laing Terrace, Hawick, Roxburghshire, I get a list of addresses as follows: 2/1 Laing Terrace 3/1 Laing Terrace 1a Laing Terrace 1b Laing Terrace 1c Laing Terrace 1d Laing Terrace 1e Laing Terrace 2/2 Laing Terrace 2/3 Laing Terrace 3/2 Laing Terrace 3/3 Laing Terrace ?? I was looking for the home of two sisters, Mary and Margaret Sanderson, who lived at 3 Laing Terrace. Do the 2/1, 3/1, 2/2, 2/3, 3/2, and 3/3 indicate apartments in buildings, or what do they signify? 1. Archbishop David Beaton
    2. Alex I Seggie
    3. Hi Since there are members of this list who are know a lot about the Archbishops of St Andrews, possibly someone can direct me to some further information. Cardinal David BEATON, Archbishop of St Andrews, was murdered in his castle. The people involved were later tried for treason. I have seen a brief note about the trial in a book I found in the Hay-Fleming?? library during a visit to St Andrews. I presume that a more complete trial record exists somewhere, and I was wondering where I should look. What I am most interested in is the names of the 18, and the details about their punishment. I believe all were executed, but I was wondering if there was a list of what land was seized. John KNOX was involved in this, but was only imprisoned. Probably because he was not one of those who occupied the castle after the murder of Beaton. I have reason to believe that one of those executed was a SEGGIE. My direct ancestor. I believe that there was land seized at Guardbridge (near St Andrews) that ended up owned by the HAIG family who sited a distillery there. I believe that there was land seized on the Tay downstream from Perth that was later used by HAYs. Possibly on both shores of the river. There may be a third parcel of land towards Inverness. Any help in finding any of this information would be GREATLY appreciated. 3. In playing around with the CDs again, this time the census listed as Navy, came across a list for the ship "MANITOBAN." It's a long list which I will post later in pieces. However, there were young boys listed as passengers with the occupation listed as Orphan Home Boy. I have sent an inquiry to the ShipList to see if anyone knows where that ship was headed. The boys were mostly from Glasgow and ranged from age 6 to 18. The list also included a lot of passengers from Ireland - families, single people, etc. I will post all of it later. In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas about why these boys were leaving? Or where they were headed? And why? He was in the >Scots Guards serving in France at the time. >Where should I look first I'm afraid that there is only a slim chance of finding out why he was awarded the Military Medal. Announcements of this award, as with all other gallantry awards, were made in the London Gazette. However over 115,000 Military medals were awarded, and the London Gazette did not have space to print the "citations" for each medal, as the reasons for award are called. The LG is certainly proof that he was awarded the medal, but not why. You may want to go to a large library and see if you can find the relevant entry in the London Gazette. This will at least give you the date of the award, and that is a start. The usual method to find a reason for award is to look at the relevant Regimental or Battalion histories. Some of the more detailed volumes will carry a story about a particular action and finish by saying "For his courage, Pte Smith was awarded the Military Medal" or words to that effect. Local newspapers for his home town might also give brief details, although they are more likely to give a photograph of him, rather than saying why the MM was awarded. The main history of the regiment during the war is: The Scots Guards in the Great War, 1914-1918 by F Loraine Petre, Wilfred Ewart and Maj Gen Sir Cecil Lowther, 1925, 349 pages. His Army documents may have survived the bombing in WW2, and now be available to the public, or become available over the next few years. The Public Record Office says that no citations are contained in them, but there are often surprises at what is contained in a set of Army documents! The Guards Museum may also be able to help: Correspondence to: The Guards Museum, Wellington Barracks, Birdcage Walk, London, SW1E 6HQ, England Telephone: +44 (0)171 4143271; 4143428 Exhibits of weapons, uniforms, Colours & Trophies illustrate 300 year history of Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Welsh and Irish Foot Guards, with displays on Waterloo, Crimea, World War II & Falklands.
