    1. Williamson, Janet + Davis (Dains) Ann - help needed please
    2. Bob & Brenda McLeish
    3. Have not long been given a copy of a letter (1875) from Margaret Coghill (nee Williamson) in Leith to her sister Charlotte Hudson in New Zealand. In the letter she thanks Charlotte, brother (in law) Thomas and sister Janet. She goes on to talk about a ship wreck and mail being rescued and how the sea has spoilt Janet's likeness although she can see a resemblance to father and to Aunt Ann (looks like Davis or Dains - very hard to read). There is a Janet Williamson witness to the marriage of John Williamson and Laura Ann Fullerton in Leith in 1857. I do not know if the first Janet is a Williamson and really a sister, but must be some relation if there is a family resemblance... or indeed if they are one and the same Janet. G-G- Grandparents, born Lerwick, Shetland , William Williamson (c1785-1874, son of John), and Elizabeth Anderson (1791-1875, daughter of Alexander Anderson and Margaret Pottinger) married Lerwick 5 Nov 1818 had only the following children that I have been able to find: all born Lerwick. John (Coastguardsman) c 05 Jun 1823 Margaret b 29 Feb 1824 Jessie Catherine c 23 April 1829 Charlotte c 18 Dec 1831 There is a big gap in the dates so it would be possible for one or more children to have been born. Can anyone help me with Janet. Have never been able to find siblings for William or Elizabeth but maybe one of them had a sister Ann, can anyone help with her? Family moved to Leith, Edinburgh. 1. Where John married Laura Ann FULLERTON b Lerwick 03 Aug 1831, daughter of Samuel FULLERTON and Mary LAURENSON, in Leith on 02 June 1857. They had three children, William, Margaret and Alexandrina. Samuel FULLERTON and Mary LAURENSON (daughter of William) had four children Laura Ann, Arthur c. 06 Nov 1833, John c 1838, and Samuel c 25 Jul 1844 . In the 1851 census they are shown as living at Freefield Docks where Samuel is discribed as a Sailmaker. 2. Margaret married Robert Phynn COGHILL and emigrated to New Zealand with their three daughters and son-in-law Alexander ANDERSON b Perthshire 1848 but rumoured to be related to Elizabeth ANDERSON (above) 3. Jessie Catherine married Joseph HERBERT and emigrated to New Zealand with (4) sister Charlotte who married Captain Thomas Hudson in N.Z. Childen of John and Ann Williamson. Margaret WILLIAMSON emigrated to New Zealand and married Thomas FORDYCE (b Leith 07 Oct 1859) Alexandrina WILLIAMSON emigrated to New Zealand and married Joseph Nisbet HERBERT (b Rawene, New Zealand). Any information on these famillies would be appreciated. Many thanks Brenda McLeish (nee HERBERT)

    1. Glasgow/Edinburgh Assay Office Records
    2. Janelle
    3. Hi Listers I am still trying to track down information on my Silversmith ancestor, James DAVIE of Greenock. I was in touch with the Goldsmiths Co in London who sent me some information but advised the following: "I believe that the Glasgow Assay Office records are kept in Edinburgh but the exact location is not known to me. You might try the Central Library, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EG, Scotland for further information." Does anybody know whether there are email addresses for the above organisations? As I am in Australia, it is a little difficult to check the Central Library in Edinburgh. Perhaps SKS could look up the telephone directory for me and see whether there is a street address listed for the Glasgow Assay Office and the Edinburgh Assay Office (or equivalent). Much appreciated Janelle Canberra, Australia aurora@dynamite.com.au Researching: Davie, Halliday, Taylor, Barr, Campbell, Menzies

    1. Pigots Directories
    2. Janelle
    3. Hi Listers Could anybody tell me how often Pigots Directories were published and what information they give. Would they list a Street Address for businesses? I gather that the Directories are divided into Towns/Cities. I have received information that my GGGrandfather, James DAVIE, is listed in Pigots Directory of 1815 for Greenock, under "Goldsmiths and Jewellers" as a "Silversmith and Vinter" ----- does anybody know what a Vinter is? This information was from a book on Scottish Gold and Silverwork by Ian Finlay and not from the actual Pigots Directory. 3. The postcode site that is linked to Freebies for Genealogists returns all addresses with the same postcode. One postcode normally covers a street or part of a street and up to 50 houses can have the same postcode. Regarding the split numbers I can only guess as I have no detailed knowledge of the area. My guess is that these are fairly large properties that have been subdivided in to smaller units and that 3/1 etc refers to Number 3, Unit 1 Hope this helps. >Good evening, John: > > >Could you explain why, when I'm looking for 3 Laing Terrace, Hawick, >Roxburghshire, I get a list of addresses as follows: >2/1 Laing Terrace >3/1 Laing Terrace >1a Laing Terrace >1b Laing Terrace >1c Laing Terrace >1d Laing Terrace >1e Laing Terrace >2/2 Laing Terrace >2/3 Laing Terrace >3/2 Laing Terrace >3/3 Laing Terrace ?? > > >I was looking for the home of two sisters, Mary and Margaret Sanderson, who >lived at 3 Laing Terrace. I am searching for Pleasant Thomas Cummins parents or him He was born Dec 20, 1810 in North Carolina, USA Died in 1891 in Kentucky, USA he was a farmer He married: Elizabeth Miles born 1813 in North Carolina, USA They had 9 children My data that was given to me may be incorrect. I cannot find trace of his life, nor his fathers in America. I heard he or his father was from Scotland. And to be honest, I have NO idea how to begin a search for him or his father in Scotland. Therefore, I am hoping the name may sound familiar to my fellow researchers or someone may know how I can get started with my search in Scotland. Thank you! AC Amcwku@aol.com

    2. First of all try the website < www.edinburgh.org >and the Scottish record office Edinburgh, the name Kincaid I believe is associated with Loch Lomond area, also with a village named Clachan of Campsie near Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire where there is a family burial vault of the Kincaids in the village graveyard, I was married in March 1997 in Denny, Stirlingshire and the reception was held at the Kincaid House Hotel, Milton Of Campsie, a former mansion house of the Kincaid family and the same family which has the burial at Clachan of Campsie. There are numerous Tartan shops in Edinburgh, almost as many as "Edinburgh folks who think they are better than Glaswegians, erroneously" Scottish Joke!!! I can recommend Macphersons Highland Kilt shop in Edinburgh for all things tartan and Scottish. Jim McPherson. www.clan-macpherson.org

    1. Re: 1881 Census
    2. Lynn Prettyman
    3. Betty, My great-grandmother came over from Glasgow, 30 Sept 1887, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the S S MANITOBAN. The following data is the only info I have been able to find about the ship, and I have abridged it. The original text can be found on: http://www.fortunecity.com/littleitaly/amalfi/13/shipno.htm Someone named Ted Finch sent it and cites his source as NORTH ATLANTIC SEAWAY by N.R.P. BONSOR, vol 1, p 312. [It is listed as the OTTAWA 2, not the MANITOBAN.] The ship was initially known as the OTTAWA (2) and was built in 1865 for the British Colonial Steamship Co of London. Launched 13 May 1865, she sailed from London on her maiden voyage to to Quebec-Montreal. In 1866, she she made a single trip from Copenhagen to Gothenburg, Christiansand and New York. On 24 Mar, 1867, she made a voyage from Antwerp to New York under charter to the US/Belgian co, Hiller & Strauss, and made her 3rd and final trip for them on 24 June,1867.She was purchased in 1868 by the Allan line of Liverpool, and sailed from Glasgow to Quebec and Montreal. At this time she had only accomodation for 25 First class and steerage passengers. She was also rigged for 3 mast sail. She was rebuilt in 1872 and re-named MANITOBAN and basically traveled between Glasgow and Quebec-Montreal until 1879 when she began Glasgow-Boston runs and in 1884 made her first Glasgow-Philadelphia run. In 1898, she left Alten, Norway for New York with eskimos and reindeer destined for Alaska. On 12 Mar 1898, she made her final voyage between Glasgow and Boston. She was scrapped in 1899. Unfortunately, Mr Finch did not include any 1881 specific activities in his e-mail to this Ship's List. I might add, this particular list is the ONLY one on which I was able to find the MANITOBAN. I paid a professional researcher to find my ggm and was rewarded with her page from the ship's manifest, and the certification of the ship to the Immigration Authority in Philadelphia. On the page where my ggm is listed, the occupations were basically labourer or miner or family and all are from Scotland. The oldest was 50 and the youngest was 2 mos. The average age was 28-34. I know this did not address your question, but perhaps was of some interest, anyway. Lynn In Baltimor MD, USA marylindsay@worldnet.att.net -----Original Message----- From: Betty Wintersteen <BAWWYN@webtv.net> To: SCOTLAND-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com <SCOTLAND-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, October 14, 1999 12:45 PM Subject: 1881 Census In playing around with the CDs again, this time the census listed as Navy, came across a list for the ship "MANITOBAN." there were young boys listed as passengers with the occupation listed as Orphan Home Boy. I have sent an inquiry to the ShipList to see if anyone knows where that ship was headed. The boys were mostly from Glasgow and ranged from age 6 to 18. I will post all of it later. In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas about why these boys were leaving? Or where they were headed? And why? 1. Toni's Family
    2. Alec Cameron
    3. It is disappointing to see there's been no "bun rush" of replies to Toni's messages, which described this family: > Generation No. 1 > > 1. JOSEPH1 SMART was born Abt. 1838 in Carmyllie, Forfar, Scotland1. He > married MARY MUNRO. She was born Abt. 1841 in St. Vigeans, Forfar, > Scotland1. > > Children of JOSEPH SMART and MARY MUNRO are: > 2. i. MARGARET2 SMART, b. 12 May 1861, Saint Vigeans, Angus, Scotland. > ii. MARY SMART, b. 24 May 1859, Saint Vigeans, Angus, Scotland3 > iii. ANN SMART, b. 29 September 1867, Saint Vigeans, Angus, Scotland5. > iv. ROBERT MUNRO SMART, b. 05 August 1874, Arbroath, Angus, Scotland7. > v. JOSEPH SMART, b. 18 September 1862, Saint Vigeans, Angus, Scotland8. As there is no mention of the earlier ancestry, I assume that the four parents of Joseph and Mary are not yet known to Toni. Listers may be interested to note that these should be readily proved, because Joseph and Mary died after 1855 the date of compulsory regisration. The Deaths entries are packed with good data including the names of the parents of the deceased, giving mothers' maiden surnames. It's just possible, that the eight oldies in the previous generations might also be determined in the same way. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The place to find these Deaths entries is NEW REGISTER HOUSE, EDINBURGH. Either have someone sit at one of the 99 keyboards there, or ditto in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Dundee etc main towns. Or....... <buy service thru ORIGINS on- line.> You might prefer to do that work more cheaply, at a Family History Centre. I would not, as it is very heavy going, because: 1. Few FHCs hold the Civil Reg Deaths Indexes, you must order these in advance. 2. The LDS versions of those Indexes are limited to a narrow date range. 3. After you make a "hit" in the Index you next consult the Deaths Register. These are NOT held in FH Centres, but are available cheaply, ordered ahead of use. 4. The Registers do not cater for recent dates. The search process involves at least two sessions of working at a reader, plus two periods awaiting postal delivery of the ordered microforms. A half- year may intervene. Don't give up! Cheers...... ALISTAIR M. CAMERON, A.A.G.R.A. also known as ALEC acameron@hinet.net.au **My Ancestral File No. is TO4M-WJ**

    1. Home Boys, Orphaned Children

    3. Dear Folks: Can't remember who asked this but Home boys were children who were either orphaned or abandoned by their parents (because they couldn't look after them..usually due to poverty.) who were placed in homes ( by this I mean institutions) in England and then sent to Canada to work generally on farms. This practice covered many years into the l920s. A lot of these children went to good homes and were raised as one of the family. Unfortunately, many were mistreated and abused. There is a web page with more information and I shall go on a search to find it and let you know. Susan norval@intranet.ca

    3. Betty Wintersteen sent a Listing of 1881 census for the MANITOBAN to the list. I never seen any of mine on there but just wanted to say thank you for your kindness in doing this and it is that kind of generosity that makes this list work so well. Thanks Sandra Cowan Slade from Newfoundland
