Hi there, The Elders in the Church of Scotland are like the minister's deputies in a pastoral sense. They visit the sick/elderly in the parish and also may have management duties within the church. Elders also have a ceremonial role to play in the communion service. The session clerk is kind of like the chief elder. Also, I would assume that in referring to the established church, this is probable the Church of Scotland. I'm sorry if this is a bit vague, but nobody's ever given me an exact definition of the term. I hope this anwers your question. Lesley (Who really should know the answer as her grandfather was a minister and father was an elder and session clerk) Angela wrote: >I have some information on my gggg.grandfather William MCQUIBAN >(1779-1852). Margaret said here...... > > Subject: First names Lieven and Plouden > I would like to know if anyone recognizes the above names as being > particular Scot. You might like to know, that in Family History Centres, there is a colourful set of Index fiche for SCOTLAND entitled GIVEN NAME INDEX TO BIRTHS, CHRISTENINGS GIVEN NAME INDEX TO MARRIAGES These are colour coded so you'll not accidentally pick up the Surname Index. The date range is for pre- 1855 only. Very helpful for searching weird names like Philadelphia Smith, or Hercules Black! Cheers............ ALISTAIR M. Black was recommended to me which I have use and found to be an excellent source for Scottish surnames. It and many other books on Scotland can be found on the Birlinn Ltd. web site which is a publisher specializing in Scottish books. I have had no experience ordering from them, but perhaps someone else would know. Their web site is: http://www.birlinn.co.uk/ Aileen Power Ontario, Canada
We have all seen some strange entries on census. Ran across one today that I just had to share with all of you. Don had a g. grandfather on his mother's side who was named Robert and was a twin, the other boy named John. The boys were born in 1867. I have had the 1870 census ordered in for many months, finally got it in. Primarily got it to just have a xerox copy for our records. Found the family -- father, mother and three children older than the boys. Where the boys should have been listed, it was "JTR" age 2 M W born AL. Had to wait until we got the entry under the magnifying glass. It says, and I quote -- "J + R". The census taker in this census was great for writing initials down about half the time. In this case of twins, he put them both on the same line!! Had we not known that there were twin boys, and had the proof, we would be forever looking for a male JTR. Have seen some good ones, but this one so far takes first prize. Don and Mary in Wyoming
I have some information on my gggg.grandfather William MCQUIBAN (1779-1852). Who lived at Whitemoss in the Parish of Dallas, Morayshire. He is noted as an elder of the Established Church, what does this mean ? and what is the Established Church ? Any help would be most appreciated. Angela MacQuibban Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

It's address is: West Register House, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh EH2 4DF. *** The National Archives of Scotland is the national central repository of nationally-owned archives (mainly govt. and other public records) plus deposited local and private records. My great great grandparents, John FERGUSON (1783-1862) and Helen CLARK (1781-1858), emigrated from Scotland to Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1847-48. They were married at Dron, Perthshire, on 8 June 1807. Their 7 children were christened at Perth between 1808 and 1821. I have searched for John and Helen in the 1841 Census for Perthshire so far with no success. I have recently discovered that on 25 May 1842 they applied to the New Zealand Company for a free passage. Their address was given as 81 High St, Glasgow (between the 'High' and the 'St' is something that looks like 'Inr' and may be an abbreviated 'Inner'). However they did not leave for New Zealand until November 1847 This has raised the probability that I may have been looking in quite the wrong place in the 1841 Census. I have no record of where they were between 1821 and 1842. I would be delighted if someone with access to the 1841 census for Glasgow could check if a John and Helen FERGUSON were living at 81 High Street. I had intended to pursue this myself through our local Family History Centre but it is about to close for 6 months or so due to building operations. Don Gregg in Tasmania, Australia.
Hello, again, It has been a while since I posted my interests and am pleased to send my new names as found by my Aberdeen researcher, Eileen BAILEY. Previously I was looking for connections to ANDERSON/(Mc)GEORGE and had no success, but Eileen has found that which I needed and I'd like to share: Wiliam ANDERSON, wife unknown, had the following children: Margaret, 1737 James, 1741-1839 §William 1742-1829 John 1745, m Jean CROCKERT/CROCKETT, d 1833 George 1752 Wiliam ANDERSON, s/o William in Hatton, married Ann GEORGE d/o William GEORGE and Margaret SMITH , who were married 17 Nov 1731. William and Ann had the following: Margaret 1774 George 1775 m Margaret ANDERSON, d/o John ANDERSON and Jean CROCKERT, d 1864 in Old Babithan William 1778 m Isabella MAITLAND, d 1858 §Alexander 1780 m Sarah BROWN, d 1863 Ann had the following sibs: James, Christian, and Elizabeth. [Eileen did not include the dates. All are buried in plot #40 in the cemetery at Fintray, Hatton, according to the lay-out of the cemetery. Unfortunately, that which Eileen sent me starts with plot # 71 and goes to plot #248] John and Jean CROCKERT, d/o Robert CROCKETT and Margaret HENDERSON, had the following children: Margaret 1791 in Tarves, d 1824 Elspet 1794-1873 Jean 1798 m James MACKIE, d 1883, Lairhill Cottage Agnes 1803-1854 (Jean had a sister, Margaret, who died at the age of 104, 17 Apr 1866, at Hill of Keir) George and Margaret ANDERSON had the following children: Anne 1806 in Keithall & Kinkell, George 1807-1872 William 1809- Robert 1810 m Christina IRONSIDE, d/o Robert IRONSIDE and Jane PRATT/PROTT, d 1876 James 1813-1839 Alexander 1817, whom Eileen thinks married Margaret REID Jean ANDERSON and James MACKIE, s/o James MACKIE and Agnes SKENE, had the following: Jane 1826-1833 James 1829-1861 Elspet 1831-1861 Helen 1833-1834 Isabella/Isabel 1835-1917 Margaret 1837-1902 Alexander and Margaret REID had the following: An unnamed baby girl 1862 George Alexander 1864 Margaret Isabella 1866 [The names and other data are what lead Eileen to believe this Alexander is appropriate to this family] The last ANDERSON connection for whom I am looking is that of Isabel ANDERSON and JOHN FORBES, married in 1768. Eileen found reference to such connection, but nothing is proven, and 130 years intervene. She states that when Margaret MACKIE, (d/o Jean ANDERSON and James MACKIE) died in 1902, the informant was a William FORBES, nephew, of East Bog, Fintray. When Isabella MACKIE died in 1917, the informant was Maggie FORBES, niece, of Schoolhouse, Dummour, Dunkeld. At any rate, these are my ANDERSON connections as discovered and verified by Eileen. I hope some of you who have been asking about these new names will recognize a link. I'd love to hear from you. Lynn Prettyman Baltimore, Maryland, USA marylindsay@worldnet.att.net
