Cathy, I am researching Henderson of Fordell. What line are you researching? Doing a lot of other Henderson research down here in Texas for the Clan Henderson Society of US and Canada. Will be happy to share data with you. The genealogist for Clan Henderson is Horace Loftin, 218 Greenwood Drive, Panama City, Fl 32407, (904)-235-2984. He has quite an extensive data bank on Hendersons. Bill in Texas

Hi all, What information would I find on an 1854 birth certificate? My John HENDERSON was christened 28 May 1854 in Alloa, Clackmannan, the son of John HENDERSON and Ann KIRKWOOD. I already know the date of their marriage. Would it give me the birthdates of the parents and the names of other children of the marriage? Cheers Jan Canberra Australia

Hi Maureen Yes, it was very sad. The asylum in Montrose is not the only one I found. Also there were many poorhouses, homes for the destitute. It must have been a very hard time for ou ancestors. As to the asylum, you have to wonder why they were put there and why so many. I feel by playing around with the CDs I am learning a lot about the past. When I checked on my ancestors in Montrose and the address (which I had always pictured as a quaint cottage), lo and behold, there were four families living there with a total of 22 people. I have noticed that a lot of the people took in boarders. Then you are also learning about their jobs or professions. So, as a history buff, I am learning more than I would in books. Thanks for sending these pages. As I look through the names, I'm almost grateful that I don't recognise any of them! I don't imagine that their lives were very pleasant. I see that there are all sorts of professions represented and then the description of "lunatic" or "imbecile". And all ages! I find it very sad. There seems to be some mis- information re Births records for Scotland, pre- 1854. Before 1855, records of birth are liable to be Church Register entries, for which there is no corresponding Civil Registration and no Certificate. As a rule, the parish, child name, date of baptism and parents' names were recorded. You may consult the original register image. This may tell no more than what you see in the Index. You may be lucky, and find that the birth date, place of residence, father's occupation, and where the child stands in the family "third child of......", and the names of sponsors. Less often, there may be the value of the offertory, and a hint as to the parents' origins. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Under the heading "REGISTER OF NEGLECTED ENTRIES" is a number of pre-1855 events (mainly births) which were registered retrospectively. These are in fact formatted like a Civil Registration. Not easy to access, but suited to the enthusiasm of desperate folk who want to focus on the period 1801- 1854 Cheers.............. ALISTAIR M. Thanks to those with who helped me with information about Newhall Street, Barony, Lanark ... My anticipation of my trip to Scotland grows by leaps and bounds! To Edward Andrews ... of course my "supposes" (suppose they are still there, suppose they are still Presbyterians ...) are long shots, but all around me in my tiny Massachusetts town are houses that have been in the same family for well over a hundred years. It could happen. It's so wonderful here and we all love it so much, that I fully expect my family will be right here when another 130 years have gone by.
