Sorry this is new trite for merry My g/grandmothers name is Emily Maud Chapman b. c. 1862. she married a William Henry Ferens in 1897 in Durham, Eng. They moved to Essex and Emily died in 1949. But before I get and b, m, d certificates I need some extra info on Emily. The main reason for this email is that after some trying to find some connections in Durham of the above mentioned family. I received some information of the Chapmans. The Chapman line of my great g/mother is are decedents of the Earls of Perth and in those days the Black Douglas and the Dow ells were one clan. 3. I am seeking information on the siblings of William ECKFORD, born 1757 in Kilwinning near Irvine, North Ayrshire. His parents were John ECKFORD and Janet BLACK. His siblings were Henry (famous shipbuilder in USA), John (doctor in USA navy?), James (farmer in Ayrshire), Peter (businessman in stocking trade in Paisley). William was the first Eckford in Australia and came as Firing Captain on the "Earl Cornwallis" in 1804. He left the ship in Sydney and took up farming. His adventures after that are quite interesting and a copy can be provided to anyone interested. Doug Huxley Newcastle Australia Seeking: APPLEYARD, ECKFORD, MACDONALD, MARSHALL, WIGGLESWORTH

    3. Purchase the death certificate of those mentioned in Queensland, or buy the Scottish birth certificate, as both names of mother and father are on it, as well as the mothers maiden name, and the date of the marriage of the parents. You could then get the 1891 census and see the whole family. 3. Yes, flesher is correct. It comes through in German as well as English and is a man who is engaged in the next step after slaughtering. Specifically de-fleshing or skinning and cutting up a beast Marjorie

Point of Order! There may not be much whale hunting 'IN' Scotland now, but Dundee was a famous centre of Whale hunting in the past - carried out in the Atlantic, presumably. So a Scotsman could have been connected with whales . No argument with the reast of this thread. -- Don McEwan West Lothian SCOTLAND Jings, Crivvens & Help Ma Boab.! <mailto:don.mcewan@virgin.net>

    1. RE: Occupation: flesher?
    2. John Andrews
    3. Regarding FLESHER, This thread was thoroughly gone into a few weeks ago on the Ayrshire list. I've included below a copy of a letter I posted there at that time. It has been established that the difference between a flesher and a butcher is that a flesher kills his own meat and retails it, while a butcher buys in meat for retail. Fleshing is also the act of skinning an animal in a slaughterhouse but slaughterhouse employees are multi skilled these days and no one person does only skinning or has the title of flesher. Before we start getting letters about Fleshers being buffalo skinners or someone cutting blubber from whales, please remember there is not much buffalo or whale hunting in Scotland! Have a nice one :^) Cheers, John. > To: AYRSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: RE: Flesher > > > At 09:12 PM 10/9/99 +0100, you wrote: > > > >My trusty ol' dictionary says, > > > >Flesher [n]. Scot. a butcher. > > Well, now I understand the problem here . . . I was using an ** > English ** > dictionary! <grin> > Today I popped in to see Alan McGarrity of the famous family of butchers. I told him of this thread and asked for his thoughts on the matter. He was pleased to learn of the interest in his trade and is also pleased to answer any enquiries anyone may have about the history of butchery in this area and other local families of butchers. The term flesher is still in use today and refers to a butcher who kills his own meat. Butchers used to slaughter animals in the back shop and sell the meat in the front shop and by horse and cart. [He went and dug out an old photo of his fathers horse and cart.] The introduction of hygiene regulations prohibited the slaughter of animals on site and as a result slaughterhouses came into existence. > >I live in Ayrshire where it is not too unusual to see butchers still > >advertised as a Flesher. It's the Lallans which has deteriorated here due to English being taught as a first language in school. I'll write again tonight when I've heard from my nephew who works at the slaughterhouse.
