Jane: Thanks for the suggestion but that was the first thing I did. They couldn't help. I understand from another station that not all of them showed the documentary. Ihave tried some of the national book stores. No luck. I have the companion book to the video. I won't give up. Thanks JoAnn
Hello, all, At first I thought it would be a simple thing to list the inmates of the above facilities, keeping in with the spirit of Liz, who has done so much for this list, and Betty WINTERSTEEN on 2 different lists, but when I ran off the entire Govan asylum census, it took 56 pages in which to do it, with an average of 15-18 names per page. There are approximately 350 persons classified as lunatics and another 500 or so who were classified as paupers. (I have a vested interest in this Asylum, as one of my BAIRD ancestresses would be committed there in 1886, so I thought to others a favor and send the names.) However, I don't want to take up the time of those of you who have to pay for the service by sending something you can't use or are not interested in, so I will do this, instead: I will be glad to look up a name or family on my lists. I will also do the same for the Glasgow Royal Asylum in Gartnavel, the pages of which only came to 48! There are some interesting names on these lists and also, since place of birth is 90% of the time listed, I have seen some "born at sea" entries, as well. For instance, an interesting name is a David YELLOWLEES, born in Stirling, who was the MD in charge of the Glasgow Royal Asylum and an Eliza SPENCE, b in Otley , York, England, was listed as his m-in-law. An example of the "born-at-sea" is W A LIDDELL, Jr, whose father was an MD in the Govan Poorhouse. Other interesting names are: IMLAH, George MERRILEES, Jessie BREACKINRIDGE, Elizabeth FRIER, Margaret FRANCH, Thomas Mc CANDLISH, Janet WEIR, Joan FORREST TEMPLETON McINDOE, Mary GOURLAY GOODLAD, Joseph,BESSOCK, b in England ROBERTSON, Agnes McKINLAY KIRKWOOD JOHNSTONE, Rebecca PROUDFOOT I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Many of the names have Ireland given as place of birth. I think the complaints will pour in if you ask on the list, so please ask me privately unless the name is one you feel for which many are searching. Hats off to you, Betty for your very painstaking work. I can really appreciate how much time it must have taken you! Lynn Prettyman in Baltimore, Maryland, USA marylindsay@worldnet.att.net
Hello, Can anyone help with a simple look up please? I am trying to find a Robert LERCHE born circa 1863 in 'Germany'. The first traces of Robert LERCHE is a marriage in 1889 in Aberdeen. He is in Birkenhead in 1891 where the census records his birthplace as 'Germany'. I have no access to the 1881 index for Scotland, and it is more likely that he was not in Scotland at this time [age 18?]. However, if there is an index to 1881 Scotland census, could SKS please confirm if he is on it or not? Thank you in advance. Regards, Gordon Self

I am trying to find info on an ancestor, Ann "Nancy" RAH, b. 1784, Scotland, and her family. She married Thomas WILKINSON in England in 1803. Thomas was b. 30 Nov. 1767, Hole House, Sedbergh; had brothers, Anthony, b. 1770, and William Robinson Wilkinson, b. 1776. Thomas and Nancy moved to the U.S. in 1830 with nine children. One had preceeded them in 1828; one had died in infantcy and the rest married and stayed back in Yorkshire. Searches on the LDS site have not given me any leads. Sorry that I don't have more on Nancy Rah. I don't even know how or where she met Thomas. The Wilkinson were successful farmers near Sedbergh. Eleanor Rayl Indianapolis
G'Day Gordon: I looked at my census records for 1881, and he is NOT listed. Could there possibly be another spelling for his name? Let me know Cheers Jani
Hi: Can anyone tell me where I can locate the 1995 P.B.S. video, The Highlanders, narrated by Sean Connery? JoAnn
Hello Mary Lindsay, thank you for your comments on Janelle, her mail really pi---d me off, what a horrible person. No I don't recollect your McPherson/Leitch connection, are you a member of the clan-macpherson-l if not and if you would like to join the list just send an E-Mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with nothing in the subject line, in the body of the message write, subscribe clan-macpherson list Mary Lindsay you may be able to get more help there, have you heard of the clan macpherson website, Clan-macpherson website www.clan-macpherson.org it has all sorts of things about the clan, Do you have a specific question on your McPherson/Leitch ancestors that I can answer perhaps, no promises my McPherson roots are from Argyll on the West coast of Scotland, so as far as I can determine they are not connected to the Badenoch clan of Cluny Macpherson but to the Campbells. I am however a member of the Clan Macpherson Association in Scotland, in the history of the Clandowill Campbell-McPhersons it states that modern day descendants have generally lost there genealogy and assume roots with the Badenoch Macphersons. Kind regards Jim McPherson
Hello Jani thanks for agreeing with my corruption of Eison theory and your comment on Janni, I have just had a nasty FLAME from her. I posted my reply to Scotland-genweb. Jim
<Aurora@dynamite.com.au> Janelle, For a start I am a Scotsman living in Scotland and I do know my history and of the delineation of ClanDowill I suggest to you that you don't know enough to criticise others, The Clandowill are named after Dougald Campbell third son of Campbell of Lochowe Dougald was the parson of Craignish and the McPhersons of Craignish are his descendants. The sons of the Campbell parson. If I get anymore FLAMES from you I shall report it to the listmanager and get you dropped of the list. Jim McPherson
You are a nippy sweety are you not Jannelle
G'Day John: I agree with Jim on the possible mispelling/corruption of the name Eason, but I'm not going to get into it with Ms. Cranky Janelle. Misspelling is really very common in Scotland. Have a great weekend and Cheers Jani

Hello Jani, Yes, the spelling is correct. I don't have dates, just the question that someone posed to me on another listing and which I am seeking an answer on the Surname "Eison". Thanks for any help which you might give. John Lester
Hello Fellow Researchers: Does any one know if Daniel Donald Graham's (born in Argyll Scotland) father was named Archibald Graham? Also would like the same info on his wife Christian Munn or where I can find it. Thanks JoAnnn
Hi to the group, I have Elizabeth McURICK, supposedly born 1844 at Cramond. Then marrying John ANDERSON 7th Dec 1866 at St. Matthew's Church, Andenston, Glasgow (these details are from a family source) The I.G.I. says the marriage (same date) was at Goven Lanark. I am sitting here in Australia feeling confused. Can someone from beautiful Scotland (I've been there once) enlighten me about the geography of the above. Also I'd love to hear from anyone with connections. Regards from Nancy in Australia.
