I'm very interested in the witnesses (godparents) and any other information re this family. I thought I could take advantage of someone who may have this film out right now. 2. The Jansen's
    3. Good afternoon all, Hi this is the second time I may have written, and was hoping someone could help me. Charles Ross married Isabella Kennedy 26/01/1843 in Kilmallie, Argyleshire, Scotland. This is the only solid information I have. I know for a fact that they had at least one daughter Margaret. I have no idea when Margaret travelled to Australia. Maybe the rest of her family came too I don't know. I am very interested in finding out if she had any siblings, whom her grand parents on boths sides may have been. As you can see I have little to no information I that family. I know that she married a Charles McPhee in 1868/9 at Newstead Victoria. His parents too came from Kilmallie, Argyleshire. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. I would hope to try and repay someone for their generous deed. Kellie J. >From the wilderness of Central Queensland.

    1. 1901 Census lookup
    2. Can anyone help with a simple look up please? I am trying to find Margaret Mary Corrigan born Nov.16, 1900 in Glasgow, Scotland (Lanarkshire). I have from her death certificate that her mothers name was Margaret Corrigan and her fathers name was John Monnick. I believe that Monnick was MMC's stepfather. I do know sometime (it is unsure when) the family (CORRIGAN or MONNICK) moved to Edinburgh. She worked in London in 1918 as a telephone operator and in 1924/1925 came into the USA, married and her first child (my mother) was born August 26, 1931. I have no access to the 1901 index for Scotland. If there is an index to the 1901 Scotland census, could SKS please confirm if she is on it (or either family) or not? Also for Edinburgh(Midlothian), could someone check a Scotland census of 19ll for a family MONNICK (John as head) with wife(Margaret) and at least one child--daughter Margaret. Also in both areas, could someone check for any CORRIGAN family with a wife:Margaret and daughter Margaret/Mary? I need as much help as I can get! This wall keeps getting thicker! Thank you in advance. Donna Hathaway please answer via email:dorothea4@earthlink.net

Nancy -----Original Message----- From: Lynn Prettyman <marylindsay@worldnet.att.net> To: SCOTLAND-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com <SCOTLAND-GENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, October 30, 1999 4:01 PM Subject: Govan Combination Poorhouse Asylum 1881 census; Glasgow Royal Asylum Hello, all, At first I thought it would be a simple thing to list the inmates of the above facilities, keeping in with the spirit of Liz, who has done so much for this list, and Betty WINTERSTEEN on 2 different lists, but when I ran off the entire Govan asylum census, it took 56 pages in which to do it, with an average of 15-18 names per page. There are approximately 350 persons classified as lunatics and another 500 or so who were classified as paupers. (I have a vested interest in this Asylum, as one of my BAIRD ancestresses would be committed there in 1886, so I thought to others a favor and send the names.) However, I don't want to take up the time of those of you who have to pay for the service by sending something you can't use or are not interested in, so I will do this, instead: I will be glad to look up a name or family on my lists. I will also do the same for the Glasgow Royal Asylum in Gartnavel, the pages of which only came to 48! There are some interesting names on these lists and also, since place of birth is 90% of the time listed, I have seen some "born at sea" entries, as well. For instance, an interesting name is a David YELLOWLEES, born in Stirling, who was the MD in charge of the Glasgow Royal Asylum and an Eliza SPENCE, b in Otley , York, England, was listed as his m-in-law. An example of the "born-at-sea" is W A LIDDELL, Jr, whose father was an MD in the Govan Poorhouse. Other interesting names are: IMLAH, George MERRILEES, Jessie BREACKINRIDGE, Elizabeth FRIER, Margaret FRANCH, Thomas Mc CANDLISH, Janet WEIR, Joan FORREST TEMPLETON McINDOE, Mary GOURLAY GOODLAD, Joseph,BESSOCK, b in England ROBERTSON, Agnes McKINLAY KIRKWOOD JOHNSTONE, Rebecca PROUDFOOT I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Many of the names have Ireland given as place of birth. I think the complaints will pour in if you ask on the list, so please ask me privately unless the name is one you feel for which many are searching. Hats off to you, Betty for your very painstaking work. I can really appreciate how much time it must have taken you! 3. Dear All Have been lurking for some months now and have really enjoyed this list. Thanks to Betty Wintersteen for her transcripts of the "Royal Lunatic Asylum of Montrose" Sunnyside, Montrose, Forfar. What a labour of love. I've read through them all "just in case ...!" But when reading through page 14 of 25 October 1999 Catherine BAIN M 41 F Golspie, Sunderland, Durham, England Occ: Gen Worker Handicap Lunatic' Please note - Golspie is in Sutherland, Scotland I was reminded of an item (I think it was on the Scots Origins Site or it may have been in one of the Family History Magazines her in the UK) which told of the error in the 1881 Census where an over-zealous transcriber (not the poor census enumerators) entered most of the "Sutherland, Scotland" entries as "Sunderland, Durham, England". So that if you search for entries by parish name and Sutherland, you will not find them, whereas if you use the parish name and Sunderland, you will find them. If you have been researching Sutherland on the 1881 census, and not had much luck, that may be the reason. They are all there, you just have to use cunning to defeat the system. Perhaps using just the parish name will work as well. Apologies to all who already knew about this aberration. Annpa (researching CASEY,CRAMPSEY, KELLY all coming to Scotland from Ireland around 1870, but also FARQUHAR from Aberdeenshire.)
