    1. BELINSHOE and ALLARDICE
    2. Bill & Pat Galovich
    3. Can someone tell me if there is still a town in Scotland called "Belinshoe", and if so, where is it please? I need to know which Parish or County in order to attempt to locate a 3rd gt grandfather who was reportedly born there ca. 1800. Also, is there still a town named "Allardice". I also have an ancestor with that last name and I've seen the name listed as a "place" on the IGI, but I cannot find it recorded anywhere I've searched so far. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Pat.

    3. I have a copy of a Marriage Proclamation Certificate dated 1864 which refers to the "1st. Congn. U. P. Church, Alloa". Would I be correct in assuming this stands for "1st. 3. Some one on another list sent this, hope it helps Naming Order of Children English and Welsh, 1700 - 1879. First daughter - named after the mother's mother (maternal grandmother) Second daughter - named after the mother's father's mother Third daughter - named after the mother Fourth daughter - named after the mother's oldest sister First son - named after the father's father Second son was named after the mother's father Third son - named after the father Fourth son - named after the father's eldest brother. Exceptions apply if there was a duplication of a given name. In that case the practice was to skip to the next name on the list. Irish, 1800's. First daughter - named after the paternal grandmother Second daughter - named after the maternal grandmother First son - named after the paternal grandfather, Second son - named after the maternal grandfather After that alternate names using the grandmothers', grandfather's; mother's, aunt's and uncle's names. If a child died, that name was to be recycled with a future child. Scottish, 1700 to 1800's. First daughter - named for maternal grandmother Second daughter - named for paternal grandmother Third daughter - named after her mother Other daughters were named after other family members First son - named after paternal grandfather Second son - named after maternal grandfather Third son - named after his father This policy holds true unless one family member had more assets or a higher social standing than the other. One unique aspect of Scottish naming was that if two grandmothers or two grandfathers had the same given name, two children in the same family would end up with the same name. Another practice was to name daughters after the clergyman or other important male figure. Regards Cheryl Australia

    1. RE: Naming Patterns
    2. Audrey Bennett
    3. Our ancestors adhered (some closely, some haphazardly) to a pattern in naming their children that can be used as clues when seeking parent names. Here is the pattern: 1st son: Father's father 2nd son: Mother's father 3rd son: Father 1st daur: Mother's mother 2nd daur: Father's mother 3rd daur: Mother I have found later children to be named after the grandparents of the father & mother as well as after siblings of the father and mother. So when John and Mary have these children: Malcolm David Margaret Ann.... ...it's *possible* John's parents are Malcom and Ann while Mary's are David and Margaret. 2. Thank you all who agreed with ClanDowill in the possibility of corruptions of names Eison for Eason & Easton, and the suggestion that it sounded Jairman, especial thanks to the list member who stated that she had friends in America by the name Eison who were of German Jewish stock. Yes without a doubt it sounds Krout! What do you think Janel, <RedNurse@aol.com> "A Rose by any other name is a rose just the same" Hamish

    3. Ben Mine are LYON, COMMON, POTTS, ORMISTON finally meeting up in Helen Ormiston born Edinburgh on 1856 March 12. Now a retired school teacher in NZ I can produce my picture standing next her in 1937; she lasted another 10 or more years. Her parents were John Ormiston 1839 to 1890 and Isabella Common 1837 to 1900. Grandparents William Ormiston 1791 to 1874 and Helen Potts married 23 May 1823 in Canongate. Grandparents James Common and Eliza Lyon and guesses bon about 1800 married about 1820 died aft 1860. Currently this is the one I'm working on. I've searched the 1861 Canonate Census without finding them ( There is Elizabeth Lyon Lodger Widow 68, Sempstress at 59A Canongate). Currently I'm working on the Duddingston OPR.
