Hi Heather, You won't find Bothkenner on a standard map but I believe it's on the A88 between Skinflats and Carronshore. The batch number for the parish is C114730. I found a marriage entry for John Meikle and Marion Porteous, banns posted 20 April 1739 in Lesmahagow. This was in the Scottish Church Records at the FHC. A parent search produced the following children: John 15 Jan 1741 born Lesma. William 16 Dec 1742 born Lesma Janet 19 July 1747 born Lesma James 20 Apr 1749 born Lesma Does anyone know anything about this particular MEIKLE family? I am hoping the James born in 1749 is the one who married Janet TAYLOR in 1777. Don and Mary in Wyoming
Hello: My Grahams were from Knapdale Argyll Scotland and I think most of them that came to America settled in Cumberland North Carolina but I can't be sure. They came over in the mid to late 1700's.J oAnn
Thanks for the letter. First of all, my MEIKLE line came to the USA around 1875 from Lanarkshire, Scotland. My grandmother was a MEIKLE, born in Colorado in 1878, daughter of the people who came around 1875. I have spent a lot of years going backwards on this line. My oldest confirmed MEIKLE in the line is James MEIKLE, born around 1750, married in 1777. He was from Lesmahagow, Lanark and he married Janet Taylor in 1777 in Port of Monteith, Perth. They lived in Lesmahagow until the 1790's when they moved to Stonehouse, Lanark, Scotland. I know there were a few MEIKLE names in Stonehouse as far back as 1691 as I am in the process of studying the Stonehouse Old Parish Register. Some years ago I received a letter from a lady in Scotland, saying that the family originated in the Lanark area but around 1300 or so went to the Aberdeen area and that the name was a sept of Clan Baird. It was in the 1600's they began to come down into Lanark. Now I do not know if this is true or not. Cannot prove it, nor can I disprove it. What I do know is that the name was written in various ways in the Old Parish Registers. If I happen to come across an Alexander Meickle, I will let you know. Dear Betty, Kudos to you for a long and difficult listing for the Censuses. While there were no 'hits' for my relatives, I certainly got a closer look at conditions in the last half of the last century. Your generosity with your time and effort are very much appreciated. Thank you, Daphne
Nancy...May I ask which Scotts you are researching? I too am searching for a very elusive Scott who migrated to East New Jersey in 1684 from Montrose Scotland. His name was Alexander Scott , he died in 1700 leaving a widow Ellin , three children Elizabeth, Alexander and Samuel. They resided in Elizabethtown and Rahway NJ. The son Alexander moved to the south Branch of the Potomac, Augusta Co (now Hardy and Grant Co's WV) Alexander Scott has many descendants scattered over the US but not one of them seems to know where he came from in Scotland or who his parents were. Does this fit your Scott family? Thanks for any information you may be able to give us on finding our Scottish roots Jessie, Calif.
Hi Don and Mary: I understand that you are interested in the MEICKLE family. I am also interested in the origin of that family in Scotland. An Alexander Meickle was imported into East New Jersey in 1684 as an indentured servant of John Campbell. They sailed from Montrose in 1684 on the ship THOMAS AND BENJAMIN and landed at Sandy Hook NJ. I am trying to find the places these passengers of the Thomas and Benjamin originated. There were 130 passengers and most of those I have located came from either the Montrose,Angus or Aberdeen areas. Do you know where the Meickle family lived? I can't find an Alexander Meickle in LDS records. Jessie, Calif.
I hyave only just rejoined, so may be posting something already said on this subject. Whilst there is a customary pattern, there is no guarantee that every family followed it: there are all sorts of reasons for deviating, eg 1. both grandfathers/grandmothers had the same name. 2. one of the parents has fallen out with his own parents/in laws. 3. thanking a local benefactor, or even creeping round the minister/laird etc. 4. the father and one or both grandfathers have the same name 5. at certain times, children were named after the latest addition to the royal family, see how Albert suddenly became popular. 6. one of the grandparents died so long ago that the parent involved can not remember him/her, and perhaps wishes to honour a step parent. 7. I am sure you can all add to this list, 8. no reason at all ! So take the sequence as a guide, not a guarantee. Donald Massey (glad my father did not name me after his father !)
