    3. Hello Le, According to - Collins book (ISBN 0-00-435665-9)(£5. GBP) SCOTS KITH & KIN - A Guide to the Clans and Surnames of Scotland. The Surname GAY was found in ANGUS from the 15th c. - and in FIFE from the 17th c. The Surname GAYRE belonged to the Clan GAYRE.. GAYRE of GAYRE and NIGG, arose in CORNWALL (England) in the 12th century. One branch settled in Yorkshire (England) in the 15th century and crossed into SCOTLAND in the 16th century and held lands in NIGG in Ross-shire. They rapidly multiplied and became land owners throughout EASTER ROSS. A small clan, it was recognised by LORD LYON ( In Edinburgh) earlier this century. SEPTS of the clan GAYRE are as follows - GAIR - GAIRE - GEAR - GAYRE - GAIRN - GEIR - MCGAIR - MCGEIR -GARRISON - GARSON - KERRISON - MCGIRR. Hope this helps a little. 1. Re: [SCOTS~GEN] Clan Ross Association of America
    2. Dear June, That's my big road block on those 2 lines. I only know that they did come from Scotland but no record I have found so far says where in Scotland or exactly when.....I'm also looking for MacCormick/McCormick/McCormack, William who came from ?? in Scotland and settled in Orange co, NY married Elizabeth Atwood @ 1803 (male children were Henry, Charles, and Jewett or Dewitt, girls were Mary, Elizabeth and Electa). My McKay's and Ross' settled in Burke Co, NC eventually. Family history says that 3 Ross brothers came over from Scotland together to PA and all settled in Different areas. My Ross in Benjamin who was born 1766 in ?? Scotland (His father was Reuben) and married Saphira Frizzell (another Scot) in Lincoln co, NC 1794 before moving on to Burke. The only child I have record of was also named Reuben...Reuben M. Ross (I've been told that the M may have stood for McCall-another Scot family found in Burke Co, NC) From what I've heard from a cousin, our McKay's went to Ireland first before coming to America (Scots-Irish or perhaps Ulster Scot). Boy what I wouldn't give for some help on these. I have looked at passenger lists until I am blue in the face to no avail........... Audrey

    3. Mac Hattie or Mac Hatty belongs to Clan Chattan and may wear the Clan Chattan tartan. There are variations in the spelling as with many surnames; i.e Mac Hatton, Mac Hattan and Mac Hat. In some cases the 'Mac' was dropped and the surname simply became HATTIE. HATTY, HATTON, HATTAN, etc. There was a William de Hatun who witnessed a charter by Matthew, bishop of Aberdeen, about 1171-99 according to Black's "Surnames of Scotland." This might indicate Norman origin. The Motto for Clan Chattan is; "Touch not the cat but (without) a glove." Clan Chattan is a federation of clans going back to 1291, composed traditionally of 17 clans among whom were the Macphersons, MacPhails, Cattanachs, Mackintoshes, Farquharsons, Shaws, Toshachs and smaller clans which joined for protection such as the Clerks, Davidsons, MacLeans, MacQueens and Smiths. The tartan is primarily red. This information from Alexander Fulton's, "Scotland and her Tartans." 2. Dave and Hazel Whitehouse
    3. Listers., We are seeking any connections to the above person or family HELM of Roxburgh, Scotland. This enquiry stems from a friend starting out on the first steps of genealogy research (bless them!). THOMAS HELM was born in Roxburgh (c1841). He, alone, or with his family, travelled to New Zealand where (in maybe 1877) he married Anne Elizabeth MILLER of Victoria. They had ten children including., Jack., Fred., Annie., Thomas., Freda., Sam., Lucy., Angus., Harry and Andrew Barton HELM, from whom our friend descends. Andrew was the youngest born in 1900 in Mataura and was the grandfather of our friend. If anyone has a connection with HELM of Roxburgh we would delight in sharing information. Kind regards Dave

    1. [SCOTS~GEN] Advice please!!
    2. Kay Podmore
    3. Dear list, I am new to this list and have joined in the hope that I may be able to find out what part of Scotland my ancestor Andrew Hunter FINLAYSON came from. I have exhausted the IGI, Scots Origins and Tasmanian Archives. I have his marriage certificate (where he was married in London), father's name (Robert) and approximate age (born 1815 - 1822). I had 3 close calls on the IGI and Scots Origins but all 3 (from Newton, Penecuik and Dunblane) have all proved NOT to be my man. Can anyone tell if there are still parts of Scotland that the IGI and Scots Origins don't have birth records for? Any other advice on how to find MY MAN would be much appreciated. Thank you in anticipation Kay Podmore ===== Best wishes Kay Podmore Bensville NSW Australia _____________________________________________________________________________ http://messenger.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! 1. Re: [SCOTS~GEN] Advice please!!
    2. George M. McCaig
    3. Kay, Unfortunately, there are many birth records that do not appear in Scots Origins, or the OPR's. Prior to 1855 (Civil Registration started then) Old Parish Records only recorded the births of adherents of the Church of Scotland. If your ancestors were adherents of any other (or no) church - United Presbyterian, Free Church,Methodist, Catholic, whatever, you will have to locate the parish records for those churches, if they are still available. The practice pre-1855 for marriages banns being called, was that regardless of which, if any, church you were an adherent, your banns were called in the local parish of the Church of Scotland. However, any issue from that marriage would only be recorded for adherents of the Church of Scotland. I have the same problem as my ancestors were adherents of the Associated Secessionist (later United Presbyterian). I can find the marriage banns, but no births of any of the children. Very frustrating. You do not mention when he emigrated to Australia. If it was post 1881 you might find some info on him in the 1881 census, which is available on CD which facilitates searching the whole of the U.K. for any particular name. Hope you have good luck. George M. McCaig, Dwight, Ontario, Canada.
