Beth--your suggestions are wonderful, and I'll take them up immediately. Wish me luck. Nancy
I would be interested to know if anyone had a family member in the British 8th Army during W.W.2. My Father's name was Albert (Jock) Forbes, from Dundee, Scotland, and was in North Africa and Italy. I would appreciate "any" information. Sincerely, Annie Fairchild (Forbes) Canada
My gggrandmother, Sophia DRUMMOND, (b. abt. 1840-50?) came to the United States as a nanny to the Gardner/Binns family in 1869 but was registered as their daughter. Thomas COPPINGER bought her indenture, and they got married in Nebraska. In the 1910 U.S. census record, Sophie says her father was from Scotland. We've had little luck finding the Drummonds in Hammersmith, England where she was supposed to be from. Thought that perhaps someone on the Scotland end might recognize the family. Our story was that little Sophie was 9 years old when she came over. Don't know now if that was true--she seemed to have played fast and easy with her age on the later census records. She was also supposed to have come from a very poor family of 9+ children; because they had no money to feed all of them, she came over indentured. Now we don't know if this is true or not either. ARGHHHH. Can you please help? Nancy Merrill Sayed

Nancy Merrill Sayed Hi Nancy, Do you have Thomas and Sopia's marriage certificate? that might give an age or place of birth for her. Or maybe her death certificate? Depending on the informant, that could give you more clues. Is it possible she was born Scotland as well, and her family moved to England when she was young? I ask that because in the IGI there are a couple Sophia Drummonds born in Scotland that fit the time frame you give, and doing a parent search reveals that at least one of these families had over 5 children. Hope you find her! Good Luck, Beth

I should have mentioned that Andrew Robertson went into partnership with Hazen Mooers in about 1836. They had an independent trading post for about three years on the Minnesota River. He was named the first superintendent of Indian education on the Sioux reservation. When he died, his wife, Daybreak Woman, took over the post. Sonja
Andrew ROBERTSON Scotsman. Fur trader in upper Great Lakes area, Canada and Michigan. Later moved to Minnesota with his wife, Jane Anderson (AKA Daybreak Woman) back to her homeland of the Dakota Sioux. they had a son, Thomas who was a messenger during the Dakota Conflict of 1862. Jane was born in 1810. By a photo taken in 1863, I'd estimate that her son was in his early 20's. Andrew Robertson appeared to be 60ish, but due to a harsh life, probably looked older. I'd place his birth in the late 1790's-1800. Sonja
Dear Pat The Martha Eliza Oats you mentioned do you know anything about her. She could be related to three brothers siblings of my James Oates. Samuel, Stephenson, and Richard. Hi Pat, Thank you for your note. Unfortunately my connection with AITKENs in Berwick is very small. In fact it was only a brief passing through, so to speak. James Aitken born in Largo Fife 1802, married Ann McKay (whose father was a solder) in 6/7/ 1827 in Lasswade. Their first child (David) was born in 1827 Gladswood, Berwick, but the second (John Gibson) was born in 1829 Edinburgh, Midlothian. So unfortunately I am unable to connect with or help you at present. I think it is time I started ordering in some films to see if I can find anything to fill in the gaps. My Jameses work records would be a good start - don't think there is such a thing though, unfortunately. Regards Pat Melbourne, Aust.
