I have been sent a copy of a few pages from the "Midlothian: Edinburgh Roll of Burgesses and Guild Brethren 1761-1841 (Abercrombie-Huie) " and from a section they show our "David Ogilvy" = as listed below QUOTE = "David, painter, B., in r. of (fr.) Alexr. O., skinner, B. 23 Feb 1797" I have now purchased his "Will from Web Site of http://www.scottishdocuments.com/content/default.asp and I am in the middle of deciphering same. His Will shows his death date as "Eleventh November 1829 Edinburgh" Yes I feel from the "Edinburgh Roll of Burgesses" we have his fathers christain name "Alexander" and proffession/trade as "Skinner" [1] For the year of 1829 where would I be able to purchase his death certificate?? [2] Would his Death Certificate show the full names of his fathers and mother?? your comments would be appreciaed, Kind regards, Colin Darby Australia colnet@optusnet.com.au --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. Re: Birth certificate-G-G-Grampa McNeil
    2. Hello Pat - - - I really want to thank you for your kindly and informative reply to my request for info on g-g-grampa McNeil. I think the listing you provided was him. The year of birth was perfect, location was good, the names of his mother and father were most positive because back in those old days, your first son was named for your father. William's father was George and his 1st son was named George. Also, back in those days, many men married a woman of the first name of their mom. His mother was Agnes and he married an Agnes. That was also done by my g-grampa and my grampa. So, I think the info you provided was accurate. I really do thank you for your kindly help. Bless you and yours. Don McNeil

    3. Don: You are discussing the Irish system I presume. The Scottish naming system was quite different. The first son was always called after the Father's Father. The first daughter after the Mother's Mother. I hope in this case you are right. I would hate to have you disappointed. 1. Good News for MacCallums!!
    2. Eileen
    3. Excerpt from "Scottish Snippets": MacCallum Curse Lifted After 450 Years According to legend, handed down through the generations, some time in the 1550s the members of the MacCallum clan were gathered in the church in Kilbride in Argyll for the Sunday service. But there were so many of them that when members of the rival MacDougall clan arrived, there was no room for them and they had to stand outside. This prompted Lady MacDougall (who had the gift of the "evil eye") to place a curse on the MacCallums to the effect that the sons and heirs would die off if they did not move from their home at Cologin. Sure enough, over the next few years, nine out of the 12 MaCallum sons died and the remainder fled to avoid the same fate. Now, in a ceremony at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina, where a well-attended Highland Games take place each year, a MacDougall will try to lift the curse. The plan is to have a group of MacCallums blocking the entrance and then stand aside and invite them in. Not that there is a church handy - the ceremony will be held at a beer tent, but it's the thought that counts. Unfortunately, the Lyon clerk at the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh, responsible for all heraldry in Scotland, says that for the ceremony to be official, the clan chiefs would need to be present. But there is no head of the MacCallums - the small clan merged with the Malcom clan many years ago.

    3. I'm looking for information on my great grandfather, William Henry STEEN. I believe he was born in Scotland abt. April 1847. His parents were William STEEN and Ellen HARVEY. I believe that the family may have emigrated to Canada, either Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. William Henry STEEN eventually immigrated to Maine, USA abt. 1878. He married Mary Evelyn Bowden on Oct. 25, 1882. William Henry STEEN died in Levant, Maine on Oct. 23, 1901. I would appreciate any information on this family.
