    3. Hello Anita: The following URL might give you some idea of where to go/what to do, etc even though it is a Tour Agency. Haven't checked it out yet, but "have a go" at it. If there is nothing there and no one else answers, please contact me and I shall endeavor to find some more URLs that might give you more information. There is also a Scottish Tourist Travel Board, however, can't find the URL for it as yet. Good Luck and Enjoy Scotland. I DO!!!! 3. I'm looking for information on my great grandfather, William Henry STEEN. I believe he was born in New Brunswick abt. April 1847. His parents were William STEEN and Ellen HARVEY. I believe they came from Scotland. I believe that the family may have emigrated to Canada, either Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. William Henry STEEN eventually immigrated to Maine, USA abt. 1878. He married Mary Evelyn Bowden on Oct. 25, 1882. William Henry STEEN died in Levant, Maine on Oct. 23, 1901. I would appreciate any information on this family. Thank you, ~ Peggi ~ _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com

    1. Scotland middle name IGI Index now available
    2. Hugh Wallis
    3. Dear listers I have subscribed just to make this announcement and will be unsubscribing immediately as I have no known Scottish connections in my own research. I have just uploaded my Scotland IGI Middle Name index at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis. This adds Scotland to the English counties for which I have created such an index. I believe that middle names are an invaluable resource for finding clues to family relationships. Strangely I have seen very little written about their use as research pointers in any of the literature, nor have I seen this issue discussed much on the mailing lists. I have not seen any middle name indexes or search tools available anywhere either. BUT - often a person's middle name is the same as the maiden name of their mother or a grandmother or reflects some other familial connection (maybe the name of a patron or benefactor). It may also be the father's surname for births occurring out of wedlock. It seems obvious to me, therefore, that they have significant value in genealogical and family history research. I have found nearly 39,000 different middle names (some of which are obvious transcription errors for each other) appearing in over 780,000 of the christening/birth/adult baptism and marriage records on the IGI for this region. This is out of a total of over 6 million christening/birth/adult baptism and nearly 4 million marriage records (representing half that number of marriages, of course, since there are two records in the IGI for each marriage) for these churches/chapels. This is all of the entries in the IGI for Scotland that have been extracted as part of the controlled extraction program. I have not yet checked the parents' names on the baptism records for additional middle names - that is a much longer task which I may or may not be able to do. As always a warning about using the IGI is necessary. It is ONLY an index and is full of transcription errors. However it has been a mammoth undertaking on the part of the LDS and is an invaluable aid to research. Nevertheless, it bears repeating that there is no substitute for viewing the original records (or at least fiche or film of them). The IGI does assist you in locating those records and so narrowing down your area of search. I would welcome information from one and all about what are the things I should not miss on my first visit. I am an avid genealogist, but probably will not have time to do research, since I will be with a group. Does anyone have any good advice for me, hints, warnings, etc? Thank you! In the 1920's my grandparents departed Scotland for Canada and left their oldest child with my Granny's Mom. After the death of my Granny in 1970, my family lost touch with my Aunt and her family and we are now trying to make contact with them. We are facing two obstacles in our search. The first is the surname of the family, and the second is where they may now be residing. It is thought that the surname is MacLaine, however the pronunciation is Muck-a-lane according to my Mother and her siblings and we are not sure what the correct spelling would be. The family were living in Invergordon, Scotland in the mid 1950's. If anyone on this list could give us some suggestions as to where to begin searching for information about the family we would be most grateful. Is there a roots web list that would encompass the Invergordon area? Are school registration records available on line? The family consisted of two sons and three daughters who must have attended school and church. My Mother and her siblings are all now in their late 60's to mid 80's and are most eager to know if their oldest sibling is still living, and if so where she resides and would welcome any information about their nephews and nieces. All suggestions are most welcome. Regards, Garry Andrew Brandon, Manitoba, Canada

    3. Hi Everyone, I am a new subscriber to this mailing list; the main "brick walls" in my research at present are: CHALMERS My 3G Grandparents were James CHALMERS (Occupation: Land Factor) and Agnes PARKER (Occupation: Packer). I have no dates for them, other than the fact that both are listed as deceased by the time of their son, James', marriage in 1861. The younger James is listed as having been born in Perth, and from various sources (census, marriage certificate) I calculate his date of birth as some time 1834 - 1836. He married Janet BISSET at Monifieth, Angus on 20th February, 1861; at that time he was a Private Soldier in the Scots Grays, though by 1881 he was a Foreman Mason and living at Dundee. Any relevant Chalmers data would be very gratefully received! MCLANDERS I've managed to trace my MCLANDERS line back to David MCLANDERS; he was my 5G Grandfather. He married Elspeth MELVILLE on 22nd August, 1778 at Kirkmichael, Perth, and I am descended from their son Alexander MCLANDERS who was born in 1785 at Pitcarmick, Perth. However, I have never been able to find any MCLANDERS references earlier than David MCLANDERS' marriage in 1778. Does anyone have any information about the MCLANDERS origins, or where might be a good place to look for David MCLANDERS birth details? TOSH My TOSH ancestry dates back (so far!) to James TOSH and Margaret MCGREGOR of Dundee. James TOSH was born circa 1817, married Margaret MCGREGOR on 29th May, 1840 at Dundee, and apparently his occupation was as a Seaman. He died at sea in 1878. I am descended via their son, James, who was born in Dundee circa 1842. Any data about James TOSH or Margaret MCGREGOR would be most welcome! Cheers! Sue

    3. Hi, Mary. Is the death certificate for George? If not, could George Harry have been George henry, of Utah? He is in the Ancestral section of Family Search, along with the names of his family. If this is unlikely, it still seems to be a coincidence of names, and there may be a connection, Harry being the pet name for henry, in many cases. best regards Lorraine in W Australia
