    3. ** If you have only checked one census, try the others (1871, 1881, 1891, 1901), as sometimes the enumerator inserts the exact place of birth, instead of just "Scotland" in an English census return. Try to get his military record from Kew, as this should say where he enlisted, even if it doesn't name his birthplace. That would give you some indication of where to look. The date of enlistment might be helpful in finding him in a Scottish census. Happy hunting! Gordon Johnson. According to Scotland's People there were 12 John Knox's born in 1824 - and even more if you assume that the date of birth may not be exact. I know that he ended his days as a Master Gunner in the Royal Artillery in Tynemouth in England, but would love to know where he came from originally. Any suggestions? >
