She stated that he came from a family linked to shipbuilding based in Glasgow, but 'ran away' to work on the railways. He had told her he grew up at a manse in the Glasgow area. I'm afraid I know no more details, so this is a needle in a haystack. All I've found out, however, is that he is recorded as born in Peterborough, Eng., in 1851. And he was in Derby as a railway worker by 1891. I'm trying to trace any truth in what my grandmother was told - if anyone knows of anything that might validate this I would be very grateful!
