They had gotten into trouble with the crown and thus had been sent to the colonies. Could this have been the brother of your William? I have no information on their parentage, just the note that John claimed Tyrone, Ireland as home. Family legend has them as being descendants of Claud of Paisley. Would like to make that connection.
