Carlisle is close to the border with Scotland. Usually couples married in the bride's parish - was she from Scotland? The event is too recent for the on-line records - you would need to search the register of marriages in New Register House, Edinburgh. See http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/
Hello all, I've just learned from a marriage certificate that a GGGgrandfather was a miner in (and around) 1860. Anybody know of any lists that give any more information? The information came from the cert. of marriage of his daughter, which took place in Ireland, but the place of residence at the time of marriage is given as Portobello. Would he have been living in Portobello with his family but travelling to the mines? Or were there mines in Portobello? Wouldn't have thought so, but I don't know. Or was the daughter living alone/boarding in Portobello? She's not given an occupation on the cert. Her new husband was in the 2nd Dragoons and lived in Portobello barracks. Thanks in advance for any help, Leslie
