Try finding him in 1881 Canada or 1880 US census (both online at www.familysearch.org ) . You might find his parents with him or nearby. I don't know what your access is to the 1901 US census is, but the 1901 Canadian census is online at the canada archives site. There is also an as yet incomplete (but very good) Automated census project for the Canada 1901 at http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html If you don't find him anywhere, you may have to start checking obvious alternate spellings like TYLER, TITLER, or even TAYLOR.
