We believe that they originally came from near the town of Ayr. I first heard of Sweet Avon from researchers of the Ross Co. Ohio branch of the family who had this place as part of their family history. Their John McCafferty was one of the sons of my earliest recorded ancestor, Neil McCafferty from Augusta Co.Virginia in the early 1700's. I would be interested in knowing something about your McCafferty family. If both our families were from the same area of Scotland, maybe we can help each other with research. I hope to hear from you.
