Nancy, I'd suggest: 1) checking the 1881 and 1901 census (both online) for him in the hopes that a more precise birth place is given. In any case, note children's names as they can be clues to parents' names. 2) Find the marriage record of James & Emma - likely to be within a couple of years of the eldest child. Marriage certificate will have his father's name. 3) Off to Scotland's People site - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ Joanne Toronto, Canada jcmclean@sprint.ca ----- Original Message ----- From: <nancy.daniels@comcast.net> To: <SCOTLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 09, 2004 3:00 PM Subject: [SCOTLAND] James Godolphin OSBORNE/Emma Elizabeth COUSENS > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: OSBORN, COUSENS, PUGH > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EgC.2ACE/10158 > > Message Board Post: > > I have reason to believe that my husband's great grandfather, James Godolphin OSBORNE was born in Scotland about 1839. > > I do not know the county in Scotland and do not know how to begin to search for a record of his birth.
