Balmoral Classic ~ November 14th and 15th The Balmoral Classic of 2008, the only national celebration of bagpiping in the US, will be held in Pittsburgh on Friday, November 14 and Saturday, November 15. The two-day festivities include a welcoming reception, bagpiping competition, instrumental workshops and a concert with award- winning performers. Observation of the competition and participation in the workshops are free and open to the public. Except for the welcoming reception, all of the events will be at the state-of-the-art Hillman Center for Performing Arts on the Fox Chapel campus of Shady Side Academy, 423 Fox Chapel Road. Closing The Balmoral Classic at 7:30 PM Saturday, November 15th is a concert featuring Bodega, BBC Radio's 2006 Young Folk Band of the Year. World champion Highland piper Bruce Gandy of Nova Scotia, Canada, opens. The five-piece band's performance features Highland and border pipes, fiddle, whistle, guitar, harp, drums and vocals in Gaelic and English. Bodega has been described as "Scotland's answer to Nickel Creek" by Fairport Convention's Cropredy Festival in Oxfordshire, England, "the most exciting band to come out of Scotland since Capercaillie" by Sing Out! Magazine, and "superb" and "bold and energetic" by the United Kingdom's Living Traditions Magazine. This is their third visit to the US.
