Received this response this morning on your query - thought you would like to reply directly to this. Hope this helps. Kind regards Maggie James PATRICK MAIN., MAINE., MAYNE (Dave and Anna Whitehouse) It was a pleasure to hear from you. Like you, I am descended from James Patrick MAIN who came to Tasmania via Hibernia in 1818. I am from Mary Ann MAINE, twin sister to Patrick. Interestingly, I am also descended from Sarah McCLOUD, sister to Maria McCLOUD (McLEOD) - one less tree to search, but makes for confusion at times as you can imagine. I've heard and have bits and pieces of James MAIN and his 1/2 brother. A chap in New Zealand, surname WHITEHOUSE, is also descended from James and has long searched for the correct birthday and place of his. I believe he is from Edinburgh. I say this only because his Convict indent states his birthplace as Edinburgh. I don't know that anyone has, (or if they have, I don't know about it) a copy of a birth certificate at all. Its also a bit of a mystery in tracing family trees that some children were registered and some not, especially in Tas where they lived in isolation in the early years and rarely went to "big cities". Do you have details of John McCLOUD and Mary POTTER - Maria and Sarah's parents? They were both convicts and if you don't have details, am happy to share. Its great to talk to a 'rellie' and I look forward to hearing from you. Regards Lynne in Tassie. He was born c1802., married Maria McLeod in Tasmania in 1826 and died in Victoria in 1876. I am descended from their eldest child, John James (McLeod) Main, born in 1826. They had another ten children over the next 20 years. He had a half-brother James McNab Main (Various) who was transported as well some ten years later. After gaining his pardon, James Patrick eventually set up as a builder in Melbourne and became a successful member of the community, building a few important buildings along the way. If anyone has a connection or can help with a birthdate and/or birthplace, you will have solved a very long search.
