I've been playing with ScotlandsPeople. I've used the search criteria - surname: *cdonald (takes care of mac and mc), forename: david, sex: both (sex not always recorded so never restrict search to M or F). To get highest number of results (25) for the first credit, I gradually extended the possible birth dates and got 25 results in the period 1746 to 1773 (only 5 from 55 to 65). Perhaps this gives you somewhere to start. There are none in Newhall unfortunately - that would be too easy. Best of luck.
