Something else to watch out for with the naming pattern of children is the high childhood mortality and reuse of names. It may seem that the parents have named their children after their own parents, but not in the order you would expect. It may be that a child died in infancy and the name given to it was reused for the next child born of that gender. A naming pattern that does not comply with the tradition is a clue that this may have happened. Another very useful resource is the 1881 British Census available from the LDS on CD. The familysearch site has the 1881 census transcription available for free for England and Wales, but not for Scotland. Scotlands People have that on-line for a fee. However, the CD set includes Scotland.
