I am trying to get information on McNeill/MacNeil/macneils during the 1700s. My grandfather was a physician, presumably in Scotland then came to the US after 1750 or 60s. He was here and already had his family in 1790. I have contacted by phone the colleges in Edinburgh and Glascow to no avail. He was married to a Mary Beaton Smiley/Smilie/Smellie (?), also from Scotland. I have read that the Beatons were well known in the medical fields back then. Is it possible that he was apprenticed to his wife's relative or to someone else? I know for a fact that he performed surgeries in the state of Georgia, USA until the early 1800s. He amputated his own leg and trepanned a silver dollar into his daughter's forehead (my grandmother) when she was kicked in the head by a horse. But there seem to be a thousand Archibald McNeills.....I would appreciate any help. I also have access to Ancestry's UK info. Patricia in Georgia
