On the other hand, my grandmother had a sister born out of wedlock in 1889; her name was Alice Hughes McPHERSON. HUGHES was her mother's surname, McPHERSON her father's. She was the oldest child in my grandmother's family, Gran being the second-oldest. On subsequent censuses, Alice is given as Alice TULLIS, TULLIS being my grandmother's surname (i.e. she was "adopted" by my Ggrandfather when he married my Ggrandmother). It took me a LOOOOOOooooong time to find her birth record!
