It was begun and known as Port Glasgow because for many years larger vessels could not reach Glasgow due to a hard rock sill in the river. That was eventually blasted away and allowed large ships to get direct to Glasgow. Port Glasgow in in the county of Renfrewshire; Glasgow is in the county of Lanarkshire. Pre-1855 records are church registers, neither as full nor as complete as civil registration, but they are all we have, apart from census returns, but these first have names in 1841.
