    1. [SCOTLAND] JONES James & FORRESTER Jane ~ looking for further information
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: pete_lodge Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22287/mb.ashx Message Board Post: James JONES born about 1853, died June 1923 aged 70, at the time of his death he was living in Leith Street, Edinburgh (I believe this is in the Colinton District)....the death record says parents were James JONES and Ann O'NEIL ~ nothing further known about them. James JONES married a Jane FORRESTER before 1890 because they had a daughter named Jessie JONES born 1890. Jane FORRESTER JONES died before 1914 because she is listed as desceased on her daugther Jessie's 1914 marriage. James JONES and his daughter Jessie were living at Cockleroy, Currie in 1906 because Jessie had an illegitimate child then, I have the birth record of this child which gives Jessie's address. Would like to find James JONES and family in census to try and find out when wife Jane [FORRESTER] died plus the names of any other children besides Jessie b.1890.... At the time daughter Jessie JONES married in 1914 she was living at Kingsknowe Farm, Slateford, Colinton, Midlothian, I'm not sure if she was still with her father. Thanks for help. Author: Picasso2227 Surnames: Sutherland, Sutherlin, Southerland Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22281/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I am writing to inform you of the new "Sutherland DNA Project" at http://www.sutherlanddnaproject.com/ . We look forward to providing relevant and exciting information for you at the new website. I'm also pleased to tell you that Robert J. Sutherland has recently joined me as co-administrator of the 'Sutherland DNA Project' . Robert started the new website, and is a biochemist, with formal training in the field of genetics from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, USA. I background includes a masters in business including statistics, and a deep interest in genetics, genealogy and Scottish history. Working together we hope to bring some help to other Sutherland's from around the world who are attempting to re-connect with their family heritage by learning more about their deep ancestry through modern day DNA analysis. By partnering with FTDNA, a reputable company which tests and analyzes only very small sections of only one of your 46 chromosomal DNA strands (the Y-chromosome strand only), we can fully recommend utilizing this type of genetic tool with confidence that your right to privacy will not be infringed upon. FTDNA does not perform testing of SNP's known to be suspected markers related to health. FTDNA is in the business of genetic genealogy, not genomic health. So if you get a chance, please visit our new website at your earliest convenience. We're hopeful after reviewing all of the benefits of analyzing your Y-Chromosomal DNA to learn about your genealogical past, that you will consider coming on board with the many hundreds of thousands of other folks who have decided to join DNA projects around the world. Any male Sutherland (Sutherlin, Southerland, etc) can sign up for the project and recieve a discount. We reccommend that they consider the Y-DNA67 test, on sale in December for $199.00 (Sutherland project group rate), which is regularly priced at $268.00 by FTDNA. Here's the link to order the test kit: http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Sutherland If the test is given as a gift, simply fill in their name for the kit and order. If you've already taken the DNA test with FTDNA, or at another lab, please send us your results and join the project. Both Robert and I are volunteers who receive no financial compensation from you or from the companies we get our DNA test kits from. This is not our business and we make no money from it. In fact, we have spent our own money (and time) to set it up and to keep it running. Feel free to contact us through the new website with any questions, or concerns, you may have. We'll be happy to answer them fully, to the best of our ability. Thank you- Warmest regards, Patrick J. Visser-Sutherland Clan Sutherland Society of N. Author: kelvinbell1 Surnames: Josef Keller Hackell Classification: marriage Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22279/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have information about whether it was normal to be married in your own home in Scotlan d in the 1870s? My wife's gt. grandfather was married in Edinburgh in 1870. The extract from the Register of Marriages states that the marriage took place at 15 Catherine Street "after Banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland". There is a Minister named and two witnesses. However, the usual residence of the bride and groom is also given as 15 Catherine Street. Is it likely that they were married at home rather than in a Church? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cinden426 Surnames: Russell Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22278/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I don't have access to the Ancestry.com international material to view the Scottish censuses so I hope someone here could help me with a look-up. The "Russell" branch of my family first came to Pennsylvania, USA, with my 3rd great grandfather arriving here in April, 1848. In August, 1852 The rest of his family came over. In the 5 August 1852 ship manifest for Thomas' family's arrival, these are the people who are listed... William Russell, aged 50 Ellen Russell, aged 50 Jane Russell, aged 21 William Russell, aged 19 John Russell, aged 15 Robert Russell, aged 13 James Russell, aged 10 Francis Russell, aged 8 Thomas' wife's name was Jane and was born around the same time as the Jane in the manifest was born... which could mean that this could be her, and not a sister Jane, which he may have had. To confirm this, could someone try to find this family in the 1851 census and tell me their relationships to each other (such as, daughter-in-law, etc.) and also their village and their given birthplaces. Also, please note that Ellen Russell may have also went by the name, "Helen". Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Mark Russell M. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22276.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Acceptable, but my point was that it was normal practice throughout Scotland, that a woman RETAINED her maiden name throughout life. All the OPRs show this, as do the kirk session minutes, as do the gravestone inscriptions, and as do all other Scottish records, from protocol books to the Register of the Privy Seal, and the Register of the Privy Council. It was in England that a woman took her husband's surname, and that over the years that pressure, through officialdom, had some influence on official records such as the census, and on newspapers, and eventually on the Poors Registers (where "Widow Brown in Wick (etc.)" became a frustratingly acceptable norm). Author: AngusMcMillan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22276.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I made no point about exclusive practice in Gaelic speaking areas, simply that your approach to the issue via what one might see as bureaucratic practice, which is undoubtedly one factor, is not the only one. In the areas with which I am familiar, there will not have been much if any pressure, English or otherwise, but there was a culture, still to a degree in operation, for a woman to revert to her maiden name for most purposes, not just for censuses, on the death of her husband whose name she had taken only 'until death us do part'. As you say, a personal choice, but a different driver. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Practically ALL Scottish gravestones name women with their maiden names, whether married, widowed, or single. Most Scots never spoke gaelic. Author: AngusMcMillan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22276.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There is a slightly different take on this practice, at least in the Gaelic speaking areas. The marriage vow was 'till death do us part' so, on the husband's death, the woman often though not invariably, reverted to her maiden name. Prett well all the older stones ta least in the graveyards with which I am familiar simply have the woman under her maiden name. Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22276.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There were two factors involved: 1. The Census was officially a UK-wide census, and the English fashion was to list the head of household, then all the rest in their relationship to the head, with the ASSUMPTION that the wife should be listed under her husband's surname; and thus widows would similarly appear under their deceased husband's surname (as was the practice for England. 2. In Scottish tradition, women retained their maiden surname throughout life (and most gravestones reflect this), so while there was pressure to use the English style, widows often preferred to return to their maiden surname for census purposes. A couple of days ago I found one in Caithness, a widow who had returned to live with her parents, and she appears under her maiden surname. It was thus a personal choice of the lady concerned, or of the head of household who was charged with filling in the census form (the schedule). Gordon Johnson, in Caithness.
