    1. Re: [SCOTLAND] Timekeeper - Tay Bridge 1872-1878
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22307.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Firstly, the timekeeper would record the starting and stopping times of the workers each day, so that they would be paid accordingly. This also ensured that each worker's presence on the job was recorded. Secondly, there was NO census during the years you give. The census was 1871 then 1881, so you could not have got that information from the census. If the bridge building company's records have survived, his name may appear, signing the timekeeping records, or in a list of employees. Dundee University may be able to say where such records are held. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know this by census records and his children's birth records. Could someone please tell me what this job entailed? Author: kbhoy1 Surnames: Allen, Hamilton, McReynolds Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22304/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am new to research in Scotland and need your insight and help. According to US Census information, my gggrandmother, Jane Hamilton was born in Scotland, and some of her children were born in Northern Ireland and some in Scotland. Jane's parents were Charles Hamilton and Elizabeth McReynolds. I believe Jane's husband, William Allen was northern Irish. The first child, Elizabeth Allen was said to be born in Scotland around 1848;I do not know if Jane and William were married in Scotland or Ireland. I have not found their marriage nor Elizabeth's birth in Ireland, but it was early for records. Elizabeth's death certificate and Jane's both say they were born in Scotland, as was an additional daughter's Anna Bella Allen, b. ~1869 Can you suggest where I should start in Scottish records? Since there were either from Co. Antrim or Co. Tyrone, can you suggest a good place to look in Scotland for northern Irish with Hamilton and McReynolds as surnames? All insight is welcome. Author: larkinfamily118 Surnames: Louden, Lowden, Lawton Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22299/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi I am trying to locate more information on my Scottish ancestor James Louden. I know that he was in New Zealand in 1836 till he died in 1858 (age 56) but I have been searching for over a year trying to find out how he got to NZ. Shipping records to NZ before 1836 are very scarce so I am thinking that maybe he travelled to US then onto NZ on a whaling ship?? But that is only a guess and I have no idea how to go about finding out. I only have the sub to ancestry.au.com so it doesn't show up any US records. I have tried to look up his birth details unfortunately I have no idea which part of Scotland he came from. Is it possible to find out his birth details? Any help would be appreciated - I just don't know where to look from now. Thanks Rachel Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi Amy Do you have a date of birth for her? Month and/or year if you don't have a day. Thanks, Linda Amy said: I know this may be a long shot but I`m willing to try. I`m looking for any more information on or help as to how I can find more about my great great grandmother Janet Anderson Paterson. When looking up her marriage certificate I discovered that she was "adopted". Her parents were listed as "unknown". (The couple who adopted her were John Paterson b.1816 and Catherine Mackay b.1819. I realise that adoption only became legal in Scotland in about the 1930s so no records would have been made.) Looking at the census` I discovered that she was living with Mr and Mrs Paterson from at least the age of 5, in Glasgow. This is where I have hit a brick wall, I can`t find any birth certificates for her as I`m not sure what name to enter. Could Anderson possibly be her birth surname as Paterson was the name of her adopted parents? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have only recently started my family history!
