I think that I have hit the wall here, with lack of official documentation. Parish of Urray did not keep OPR death records that I can see for the period (1820-1850) and the local graveyard had no stones for my ancestors, so I must assume that I am finished my research now. Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22337.1.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: No. Each OPR had its own peculiarity in what was recorded and how it was recorded. Many parishes have no death or burial record at all; Others have a note of deaths, e.g. "killed by the bursting of a gun" for one I noted; Others have no formal register of deaths, but have a record of burials and fees paid; others have no record, but the church accounts may have record of charges made for the hire of the church mortcloth. Note that sometimes the name given is the HIRER of the mortcloth, with the addition of "to John Smith" at the end, so that John Smith was the deceased. The date of the hiring will more or less be the death date. Some parishes have a combination:the name, date of death, and the charge for the mortcloth (and sometimes for the church bells to be rung). A few parishes also had extra mortcloths owned by local groups, e.g. fishermen, so that any fisher death got that mortcloth at a minimal fee. Author: IsabelHay Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22337.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I think it's less a case of how it was done in the old days, and more a matter of how this particular collection of records was put together and indexed. The death record (usually just a record of the hire of a Mort Cloth to cover the coffin) will be in the Old Parish Register(OPR)of the parish of Calder. The record of proclamation of his marriage may well also be there if that is where he lived. If he married someone from another parish there will be a record of Proclamation in her parish too. All existing OPR records, and in this case his Testament Dative, are indexed and can be downloaded for a fee from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ and there's lots of useful info. on the website about Scottish records and what you can expect to find, that can be read before registering. I have a family tree that my grandfathers cousin completed in I believe 1979 and these names are mentioned. Elizabeth would have been a sister of your relative and my great grandmother times 4. The other mystery is mary and Philip Cleaver. They are at the top of this tree and I believe that mary was an Alberger yet again a mystery. Any ideas would be wonderful. Below are 3 of them. All 10 are dated the same, all are different wordings, some are at least 2 marriages, 3 deaths and baptisms. It was either a REALLY busy day for the Bairds, or these are merely records he's mentioned in as a witness and they are all reported in a group on this particular date? Author: jebuote Surnames: Stewart, Bezanson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22335.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, if it would not be too much of a bother or too time consuming, I am trying to find the parents of my great great grandmother. Her name was Catherine Stewart. I believe that she was born Nov 30, 1822, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Catherine emigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1847. She married Ebenezer Bezanson Nov 25, 1850 and settled on Mount Thom, Colchester Co., Nova Scotia. Catherine died Mar 25, 1903, Mt Thom, NS. Ebenezer and Catherine had six children: John Allen (my great grandfather), William George, Alexander, Eliza, Daniel Donald James and Lydia Jane. Ebenezer's parents were John William and Lydia so I am wondering whether Catherine's father could have been an Allan, Daniel, Donald or James? Greatly appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide. Best regards, Jane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
