Author: GosforthPark Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22279.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sometimes if the couple could not afford to be married in a church they could be married in the manse. That happened with my wife's grand parents. We knocked on the door of the house, in a terrace in Edinburgh, and found that it was still the manse - but they no longer advertised the fact. You could try the Edinburgh Post Office directories ( http://www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office/index.cfm?place=Edinburgh ) to find out what was going on at the time Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The other possibility is that his daughter elevated his status on her marriage cert. for social reasons. As you have her marrying in 1881, check the 1881 census for him, and compare his birthplace with the census entry from 1861. Gordon. 1. [SCOTLAND] Ancestors/Descendants of DAVID NICOL and LILLIAS SMEATON
    2. I am researching the ancestors and descendants of DAVID NICOL, b. 8 February 1807 possibly in Dundee, Scotland and LILLIAS SMEATON, b. 14 November 1806 in Elphinstone, Tranent Parish, East Lothian, Scotland, daughter of JOHN SMEATON and MARGARET BRYSON. They married, possibly in Scotland, 3 June 1833. DAVID NICOL was a stone mason and traveled with his family through Scotland, England and Ireland while building bridges for the railway. In 1839-1841 I have found him in Sandal, County of York, Wakefield, England. DAVID and LILLIAS had five children that I know of. DAVID, b. about 1836 JOHN SMEATON, b. 3 February 1838 somewhere in England MARGARET, b. 13 September 1839 in Sandal, County of York, Wakefield, England ALLICE DOIG, b. 11 June 1841 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England CHARLES, b. 1845-1848 in Dublin, Ireland In 1851 the family immigrated to Creemore, Ontario, Canada through the port of New York, USA and I have tracked them from there. DAVID and LILLIAS NICOL are my great, great grandparents. I am hoping there is someone out there who may have a connection to this family or may have come across information on them that they would like to share. Thank you. She is listed as being married to John Gordon and is living in Ancaster Township, Wentworth County. Later she would move to Glanford then to Dunnville and finally back to Hamilton where she died in 1907. Any information about her would be much appreciated. Thank you.
