You need to have some general idea of where they had their business, to look them up. Another possible approach is to look for some record of them in the National Archives of Scotland online catalogue. There were often court cases over debts and trading disputes, and these records should be on there. (NAS.gov.uk) The catalogue requires exact spelling of names, so be sure of your facts before searching. You didn't mention the name of the firm, I noticed: names of firms often changed over the years, so allow for that. Once you establish the firm's location, the partners were probably burgesses in the local burgh, and there would be records of that. Gordon. However I did not see any evidence that they were all registered with any umbrella body. So to be able to trace your ancestors through that type of record, you would need to know where they lived and worked. Which is what you are trying to find out! He was born in Ireland and immigrated to the U.S. The question I have though is that before he came to the U.S. he and a brother went from Ireland to Scotland and were Linen Merchants there. This would have been ca. 1795-1818. My question is or was there a trade union or orginization that they might have been in? Something that would have registered them? He married my grandmother, Lily Flintoft, in 1915 when he was based in Fulford Barracks in York. Therefore I have no idea where he was born and raised. I have his medal roll details which confirms his regiment and the marriage certificate states his father was John McManus Rancher which was unexpected. I tried contacting the Royal Scots museum in Edinburgh to find out where the regiment mainly recruited from but have not had any reply. Brick wall as he became estranged from the rest of the family some time in the early 1920s. Any ideas where to go now? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
