Author: GordonPertJohnson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22385.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Port Glasgow is a port town on the south bank of the river Clyde, about 20 miles downstream from the city of Glasgow. It was begun and known as Port Glasgow because for many years larger vessels could not reach Glasgow due to a hard rock sill in the river. That was eventually blasted away and allowed large ships to get direct to Glasgow. Port Glasgow in in the county of Renfrewshire; Glasgow is in the county of Lanarkshire. Pre-1855 records are church registers, neither as full nor as complete as civil registration, but they are all we have, apart from census returns, but these first have names in 1841. It is free to search, but to see anything of value you will have to register and buy credits. It costs 7bp to sub for 30 cedits and it should cost you 6 credirs to see and download the extract (as opposed to at least 10bp by post for one on paper with a seal) You don't have to spenf the cridits all at once but you could use them for their parents' death certificates (if post 1855) which will give you their parents (for example) The GENUKI site si absolutley free and is a repository of information on how to research in the UK and Ireland - giving libraries, archives, details about certificates etc. It will also give information about the counties and towns you are interested in. The LDS site www.familysearch.org is free and amy have the marriage, but you will get more information on the real certificate. You say you are after the amrriage of George and Elizabeth COLLIE - what was her maiden name? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You can download a copy of the actual birth/marriage/and death certificates for just over £1 each. However for the 1800-1809 you are dependent on the Old Parish Records and not all folks in those days registered their children. I'm exploring the scotlandspeople site and I see it's not free. No problem there, but I'm curious what you think of it. Is it extensive enough to be worth the cost? I'm only interested in data BEFORE official registration became mandatory in 1855, because my family members of interest emigrated to Canada by 1835. I can't tell without paying if the pre-1855 records I'd see are worth it. What can you share with me in that regard, please? Thanks tons for the help! Author: gtomseeley Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22385/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm working on my wife's line and I've traced it back to some Walker and Perry connections in Scotland in the early 1800s. I have no experience at all researching Scottish sources, so I don't know where to go. I'd like suggestions even if it's to pay-to-play sites. Also, I think one of the Walkers was born in 1808/9 in Port Glasgow, Scotland. I have no idea if Port Glasgow and Glasgow are the same place or not. Can someone clarify that for me? The actual people I'm working on are Thomas Walker, b. 8-8-1808/9 in Port Glasgow, Scotland, or just plain Glasgow, son of John Walker of Scotland. Married Isabel Perry, dau of John Perry of Scotland, possibly born 1818. These Walkers emigrated to Hemmingsford, Quebec, Canada by about 1835 and eventually ended up in Kane County, IL, by 1852, where most of their descendants hail from. Author: rajburr1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22384/mb.ashx Message Board Post: James and Martha married at 118 Union Street, Aberdeen on 23 October 1888. He was aged 32, the son of James Wilson and Christina Rennie. His occupation was police constable, and at the time of his marriage, his address was Castleford, Yorkshire. It is believed that he was born on 9 December 1855 in Fyvie in Aberdeenshire. Martha was aged 32, the daughter of George Chapman and Christian (Christina) Beaton. She was born in 1856 in the parish of Monquhitter in Aberdeenshire. I have not been able to find any other record of this couple. I have searched the Scottish census records for 1891 and 1901, the English census records for 1891 and 1901, the Canadian census records for 1891, 1901 and 1911 as well as the US census records for 1900 and 1910. I am keen to know what happened to James and Martha. (Martha's grandmother was Elizabeth Burr from my Burr family in Aberdeenshire). I can be contacted directly at rajburr@westnet.com.au Rob Burr Canberra, Australia Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: DanielHBailey Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/10430.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I do not know if this will help, but Bailie is the title of a city official, while Baillie is probably the Gaelicized version of Bailey. The Baillie line(s) in Scotland are not very numerous, and there is some controversy about the origin of the name. Some historians claim the name is derived from the discredited Balliol line (puppet kings of scotland under Edward I). However, I believe the name is simply the Gaelic version of the Bailey name, and that they came to Scotland from Ireland during the Bruce's war to restore independence from England. Author: DanielHBailey Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/21891.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I guess you are aware of the "rising' in 1745 for Bonnie Prince Charlie, which ended about 1746. Afterward there were many Scots sent to various locales around the world to purge the rebels. This was the time when even clan tartans were outlawed. This was also during the end period of the highland clearances when clan members were ejected from ancestoral homelands by greedy clan chiefs so they could use the land to raise sheep. The conditions for the ejected clan members was appalling as they had no means of support, and famine conditions existed for many. Author: frankmcgurrin Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.general/22382.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Alexander/Anderson marriage took place on 14 Sept 1908 and young David is shown as being 23 yrs old. That would make his year of birth 1883. There is no David Alexander listed born in 1883 in Renfrewshire. However, there are 6 David Alexanders born in Renfrewshire between 1875 and 1884 (see attached). I have checked these out and none list the correct parents names. I can find no marriage for a David Alexander and Jeannie Ingram any where in Scotland between 1855 and 1908. There were only 2 marriages between and Alexander and an Ingram in Scotland in that time (see below)...these are unlikely. There were only 4 marriages of a Jean Ingram in Scotland between 1855 and 1865, (unlikely to be after that date) (see attached). The witnesse's to David and Janet provided no leads....looks like her brother (Tom Anderson) and another (Annie Davidson). It may be that David and Jeannie were married outside Scotland and David Jr was born outside Scotland. It's possible that Jeannie Ingram was David Jr's mother but that his father remarried, hence your Mary. Good luck. Frank Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
