Carlisle is close to the border with Scotland. Usually couples married in the bride's parish - was she from Scotland? The event is too recent for the on-line records - you would need to search the register of marriages in New Register House, Edinburgh. See http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/

For example: Davies is the surname clan of Davidson. Does this mean they maybe did not have a lot in the family to, shall we say fight off the enemy, so the family joined forces with the Davidson clan to help reinforce their family. Do I understand it right? Now, I have another question. The Davies are Welsh, how did they get hooked up with a Scot family? I assume in those ancient times they did not cover too many miles in a day. They didn't have a jet setting on the run way waiting. Just wondered. Maxine

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.msn.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/5541/EgC.2ACE/6895.3.1 Message Board Post: Hi Linda, I was looking through the Ancestry message boards tonight and saw that you were inquiring about Charles Burns. I have not found much about him and think the only possible way to find more is to go to Virginia and spend a lot of time just going through tons of files and data. So much of what is posted on the Internet is pure speculation, not fact, so I don't pay much attention to it. I have a copy of Charles' will, dated 3 April, 1789, in which he spells out what is to be given to each of his children and to his wife, Ann Burns. Apparently Charles was married twice. First to Mary Ann (Morris) Webb, and then to Ann Rea. Ann appears on the 1830 Haywood County, North Carolina census as head of household, living with a freed slave or a free person of color. You and I are closely related. William Burns is my g-g-g-g-grandfather. Andrew Burns is my g-g-g grandfather, and Hugh or Hue Burns, is a brother to my g-g-grandfather, Perry B. Burns. I have the Revolutionary War record of William Burns of you're interested. Also the Revolutionary War records of William's brothers, Samuel and Andrew, and am waiting for the records of the remaining brothers. Alexander, John Arthur, and Charles, Jr, although Jr. may have been too young to have served. These records came from the National Archives in Washington DC, so I'm positive that they're factual. Hugh Burns served in the Civil War, as did my g-g grandfather, Perry B. Burns. I have Perry's War record and am waiting for the record of your g-g-grandfather, and also the records of Andrew J Burns and Alexander Burns, also our relatives. I have a list of 55 men with the last name of Burns from Kentucky that served during the Civil War. I'm sure that I'll find more of them that are our relatives as I get further into it. I'm hoping to get down to Clay County before the end of June to do some research and to visit as many cemeteries as I can. Do you happen to know where Andrew is buried ? Also where Hugh is buried ? I know where Perry B is buried. Another of our relatives was just in Clay County two weeks ago and e-mailed me a picture of Perry's headstone, lying on the ground in three pieces. I want to see if I can have it fixed or have a marker made and placed at the grave beside the headstone. Hope to hear from you ! Tom Burns

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.msn.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/5541/EgC.2ACE/6895.1.2 Message Board Post: Hi, I see that your last name is Rushing, so I have the feeling that you are related to William M. Rushing who was married to Harriet Burns, daughter of Cyrus Iddo Burns and Elizabeth Inloe, of Johnson County, Illinois. Cyrus is the son of Samuel Burns who is buried at the Beersheba Presbyterian Churchyard in Clover, South Carolina. Samuel is the brother of my g-g-g-grandfather, William Burns, of Clay County, Kentucky. Very little information is presently available about Charles Burns. I have a copy of his will, dated 3 April 1789, which was signed shortly before his death. Apparently, Charles was married twice. First to Mary Ann (Morris) Webb, and then to Ann Rea. Ann Burns appears on the 1830 census of Haywood County, North Carolina as head of household, living with a freed slave or a free person of color. I have seen information posted on the Internet which indicates that Charles died in 1789, which I believe is correct, and is buried in Henry County, Virginia at a place called Bone Marrow Creek. So much of what you find on the Internet is pure speculation and conjecture, so I don't put much credence in it. I have not yet been to Virginia to do any research, but hope to get there before the end of the year.
