Good day I am new to this list and at a loss as to where to look for my husband's surname. The last name being STUART. All I have for this family is that the grandfathers name was John Baptist Stuart (French sounding) and he was suposed to have orginated from Scotland. No dates at all. They moved to South Africa where I have picked up a marriage for a 2nd John Baptiste Stuart to a Mary Ann Colins. If anybody could advise me where to start looking for the "STUART" spelling of the surname I would appreciate it. Given that the name is spelt Stuart and not Stewart, I seem to be having difficulty picking up a thread. Thank you Sharleen

Seeking information about Helen or Ellen McINTOSH, born around 1839, presumably in Ireland. She married Thomas WILSON in Dublin in 1860, and by 1863 they had their first (and I believe only) child, Barbara, in Edinburgh. Barbara WILSON married Peter GLEN in Edinburgh in 1881. Anyone out there with a connection? Cheers, Leslie "Record Inspector" Affordable GROS lookups and transcriptions: http://www.kodiak-web-design.com/recordinspector/

However, as far back as we have been able to trace, the Phibbs' line has been quite staunchly protestant. For example, all of Matthew and ELizabeth's children were later married under the Church of Scotland. I am guessing, therefore, that it is likely that Matthew would also have been Protestant. Or do you know if it was common for the children of Catholics to later marry under Church of Scotland? I have not yet tried the Catholic archive for this reason.. Regards, Sarah

Have you tried their registers? If not, see http://www.catholic-heritage.net/archives.htm Many deaths prior to 1855 do not appear in the indexes. There is a current Scottish Association of Family History Societies project to compile an index to burials recorded in the OPR's.

It's unfortunate that Taylor is such a common name - but I count my blessings that I'm not looking for Jones on the Wales boards :-) I'm trying to trace Helen's dad, James Taylor who was a Customs Officer. If a Customs Officer was on duty on a ship (in harbour) on Census Night, he doesn't show up at his Home Address !! :-( Best Wishes TOM
