    3. Hello List, I am new to this list and live in New Zealand. I am researching my g/grandfather's family. His name was James Irving and in 1874, with his wife Isabella (nee Burgess) and their five children , he left from Durham for New Zealand aboard the Northern Monarch. His two brothers, David and John also emigrated to New Zealand, when we don't know. Their brother George Rae Irving lived in Glasgow and married Helen Donaldson. When George died, she came to New Zealand also with children Janet Irving born abt 1889, David George Rae Irving born abt 1891 and Robert, birth date unknown. David is in the school roll in New Zealand in 1904. Could some kind soul please find this family for me. All we know is that g/grandfather James was born in Scotland about 1840, his wife Isabella Burgess was born in Lockerbie. They were married in Durham and the five children were all born in Durham. Would love to know where the brothers were born and if there are any more siblings. James' parents were James or Robert Irving and Janet Rae. TIA Dilys

    3. Hi Dilys, I checked the 1881 Scotland census for brother George in Glasgow. This possible candidate showed up: George, age 40, engine fitter at works, born Langholm, Dumfries. Wife Hellen, age 26, born Canonbie, Dumfries. Children Maggie (6), William (4), and George (1), all born Glasgow, Lanark. Living at 5 Petershill Road, Glasgow. I suggest you try scotlandspeople at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ and check the 1891 and 1901 for Helen and the children Janet, David & Robert. If you find them with any of these children above, you'll have a pretty good idea of where to look for the birthplace of James, David, John & George. Now entering the long shot element of our program: Also in 1881, in Langholm, is a William IRVING, age 83, born Canonbie, Dumfries. He is the uncle of the head of household, William SCOTT (age 41 and born Canonbie) who is in turn the son of Janet SCOTT, widowed aged 75, born Canonbie. Slight possibility this is a remarried Janet Rae Irving Scott? In 1881 Langholm is also fishmonger James IRVING, aged 74, born Langholm. With him is wife Jemima and daughters Margaret and Jemima. If you want any 1881 census details, shout. I have the discs.
