LDS they're the folk that do the IGI on internet. If you know what area of scotland you want they can order the census for you and you can check the microfilm yourself.. The film then stays at the centre so you can check it again later. If not ask at you're local genealogy society and they might be able to get it for you good luck

He was born 15 July 1860, His father David Henderson is a police constable. The address is given as Potter Row. Mary Ann Henderson was born 31 July 1863 - this birth is registered in the Canongate district of Edinburgh. The parent's names and father's occupation is the same as before. The parents are noted as being married on January ?1st? 1849 in Dumfries. I can't make out the address - something Close. I've searched the 1881 Scotland, England and Wales censuses but there are no obvious candidates for these children. I also searched for a birth certificate for Walter and didn't find one. I shall have to investigate getting hold of the 1861 census to see if I can find out more. Thanks for all your help - Shelagh

Baptists are dissenters from the established Church of Scotland. It is unlikely that a baptism by a baptist minister will appear in the Church of Scotland registers indexed by the IGI and the OPR index. The National Archives of Scotland web site does not list baptist congregations in their list of registers from dissenting congregations. The Scottish Archive Network on-line catalogue lists a few registers in various local archives. See http://www.scan.org.uk/aboutus/indexonline.htm The 1871 census is not available on-line as yet, but that doesn't mean that you don't have access to it. You should be able to order the microfilm for Kelso to view at your local LDS Family History Centre. There is no surname index to it yet, either. Give it a go. The census entry should state the parish and county of birth, if born in Scotland.

He lives in what looks like "Hoorses Market" and she lives in Wood Market.

If James was baptised in a dissenting church, his baptism is unlikely to appear in the IGI or the OPR index. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: HENDERSON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EgC.2ACE/10126 Message Board Post: I've tried sending this message to the list twoce with no success so am trying the board instead - apologies if some of you have received it already. My great-great-grandfather was James Henderson. He married Margaret Howieson in Galashiels in 1872. On their marriage certificate it says his parents are David Henderson, Barber, deceased and Mary Ann Henderson, Maiden Surname Ward. I've been searching and searching but I can't find any more information about his family or James's birth. James and Margaret moved to Sheffield sometime between 1874 and 1880 and show up on the 1881 census. I can't find any trace of his mother on the Scottish records and when I search the death records for David Henderson there are just too many possibilities, I need to narrow it down either by age or location. I've searched IGI and the Scottish records site for James's birth and/or his parents marriage but can't find anything that fits. He would have been born around 1849, give or take a year. It's possible I've read his mothers maiden name wrongly, although I can't think of anything else that would fit. If anyone would like take a loo! k I can send you the TIF file, I'd be glad of a second opinion. James and Margaret seem to have lived at Kelso before they moved to Sheffield - their 2 oldest children were born there. Margaret's family is from Roxburgh, I've had no trouble tracking them down but I have no idea if James was originally from the same area. Another thing that occurred to me is my great-grandfather was called James Lewis Henderson - there's no Lewis in the Howieson family so I wonder if this is a name from the Henderson side? I'd be very grateful for any ideas on where to search next. Shelagh http://thewholeshebang.org/genealogy/tng
